Sales Tax Holiday in Texas.. Friday August 5 - Sunday August 7, 2016
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar wants all shoppers/consumers to know money can be saved on specific items costing less than $100 during the annual Texas Sales Tax Holiday. The Sales Tax Holiday begins next Friday August 5 and runs through Sunday August 7, 2016. All of us need to pay close attention to the dates each year as these dates can and do change and have since last year.
Some items are exempt from sales tax during this period of time and some are not. Generally most items of clothing, footwear, schools supplies and backpacks all priced at less than $100 per item will be exempt from the normal sales tax. Katy, TX finds folks paying 8.25 % of the total sales prices as sales tax to the state and local governments. Buying during the weekend mentioned above especially schools supplies and clothing can save shoppers a lot of money. Lists of sales tax exempt items can be found on the Comptroller's web site.
It is estimated Texas shoppers will save over $75 million in state and local sales taxes during this Tax Holiday weekend and have since inception.
The dates for the sales Tax Holiday are established by law and changed by the legislature. The program started back in 1999. It is an excellent program as many families are able to buy new school stuff with the holiday who might not have been able to so without this sales tax holiday.
We have found the shopping malls are totally a mob scene each year ( as expected) during the Tax Holiday weekend every year. Money definitely can be saved but you have to put up with huge crowds all trying to buy essentially the same stuff plus there is in most cases a lack of sufficient parking spaces.
I am posting this now so you can plan to do your back shopping next weekend to advantage of the no sales tax benefit.
