While most of the children in North Georgia are headed back to school next week, there are still plenty of activities coming up in Big Canoe for the month of August for children and adults alike. Here are the most exciting events coming up for residents to enjoy:
August Events in Big Canoe
Wednesday, August 3rd at 11:30 am at the Clubhouse there will be a birthday celebration for the "Girls of 46" which means those women about to celebrate their 70th birthday. The menu is soup, salad and dessert. Beatles music will be playing and there will be fun and games for all. Cost is $20.00.
Friday, August 5th the Squires and Stags Men's group will feature guest speaker Gary W. Black, Georgia's Commissioner of Agriculture at their monthly buffet breakfast meeting at 8:00 am.
Friday, August 5th at 3:30 pm: New Residents Welcome Orientation at the Clubhouse. Information about our wonderful community will be shared and questions will be answered. The event is free.
Saturday, August 6th: The Canoe Cubs Cardboard Regatta for ages 9 years and up. All teams must make their boats of only cardboard, paint, glue/tape. Awards will be given for: The Most Spirited Team, The Fastest Boat, The Most Creative Boat and The Best Sunken Boat! The entry fee is $20.00 per team.
Wednesday, August 17th: Ladies Line Dancing at the Big Canoe Swim Club from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Admission is free. This group meets the second and fourth Wednesday of every month.
Friday, August 19th: Free Friday Night Movie at the Playfield Park. Movie Night is free for property owners and their guests, Everyone is invited to bring their own chairs, blankets and snacks to enjoy the last Friday Night Movie Night of the season. Zootopia will be the featured film.
Saturday, August 20th at 9:00 am: The Big Canoe Adventure Race. Teams of two are invited to race and will be divided up into age groups. The is the first ever event of its kind in Big Canoe. The day will consist of running, canoeing and possibly some juggling competitions? It's all a surprise until the day of the race.
Saturday, August 20th at 11:00 am at the Swim Club there will be a presentation titled" The Fascinating World of Seashells and Mollusks" by shells expert Shelley Hanson. This program is sponsored by the Big Canoe Knowledge Series. Admission is free. Shelley Hanson is the author of two books on shells and mollusks,"Ocean Oracle; What Seashells Reveal About Our True Nature," and "Ocean Wisdom; Lessons from the Seashell Kingdom."
Saturday, August 20th: The Caribbean Steel Band will be in concert at 7:30 pm at the Terraces outside concert venue. Tickets prior to the event cost $19 and $24 at the box office on the day of the concert.
Sunday, August 21st and Monday, August 22nd: Big Canoe Women's Animal House Golf Tournament with proceeds from the tournament going to help BCAR (Big Canoe Animal Rescue). Cost is $50.00 pp to play 9 holes, and includes dinner Sunday night. The 18 hole fee is $85.00 pp person which also includes Sunday night dinner, Monday golf, and the awards luncheon. For both tournaments, the cost is $120.00 pp which includes everything previously mentioned.
Wednesday, August 24th: Big Canoe Community Dinner which will be hosted by the Auburn Club at 6:00 pm. It will be like a college tailgate party with prizes for the best tables.
Wednesday, August 25th: Big Canoe Travel Club Meeting at 6:00 pm in the Mountains Grille Room at the Clubhouse. A presentation on Regent of the Seas Cruise offerings will be given. Admission is free.
Friday, August 26th: The Big Canoe Wellness Collaborative Volunteer Forum will meet at 10:00 am at the Mountains Grille Room at the Clubhouse. Information about the Wellness Collaborative will be given and questions answered.
Saturday, August 20th: Bocce Fun Tournament which will be the kick-off to the Big Canoe Bocce season. Coffee and a light breakfast will be served.
Saturday, August 27th Big Canoe Town Hall Meeting at 10:00 am at the Big Canoe Chapel to update residents on new and exciting events, finances and operations of our Big Canoe community. Coffee and donuts will be served!
