When Summer Bites....here are some Home Remedies !
Hopefully we are all doing what's necessary to prevent mosquito bites. Especially down here in South Florida where the Zika virus is a scary new reality. But, if you have been bitten, here are some great ideas for relief that I certainly wasn't aware of, thanks to Sally K. & David L. Hanson :
Summer tends to be a more social time of year ...the barbeque...the deck and drinks....impromptu or planned pontoon cruise....it's a great time to be social !
A recent patio party with friends left us covered with mosquito bites...head to toe ! Yes...we should have had bug spray....but did not...so now for dealing with the aftermath...here are some solutions.
You may have wisely stocked your medicine cabinet for the summer season with an over the counter remedy like calamine lotion or spray...they now have some that is colorless rather than pale pink....and works immediately to relieve the annoying itch and redness that comes with the bite. One brand is
called Calaclear and many drugstores have it in stock.
In case that remedy didn't make your shopping list...here are some other choices you are likely to have around the house that can use just as well.
- Toothpaste - a spot rubbed on bite will reduce itch
and redness...you may wish to cover with gauze to
protect bedding.
- Green tea is great for all kinds of things...lowering blood
sugar...AND a damp refrigerated tea bag also treats a bite
- Honey has an antibacterial agent that will keep the bite
from being infected...don't use it until you are not
returning to the outdoors...it will also attract more bites !
- Aloe Vera leaves - broken open from your plant or leaves
cooled in refrigerator have a soothing effect
- Preparation H- yes we do know which end is UP ..does
reduce swelling and itching on bites as well !
- Rubbing Alcohol & Hand Sanitizer cooling and soothing-
a little dab will do you !
- A Listerine splash works quickly to relieve itching
- A paste of Crushed basil leaves and water...fragrant and
itch free solution
- Asprin paste - a drop of water and powered asprin will
reduce both swelling and itching
