I have lived in the city of San Antonio metropolitan area since 1970 (and in this general area since 1957) and have seen our food scene change and improve dramatically. A lot of this is due to our city's growth but part of this Alamo city gourmet evolution is a change in taste by our citizens and of course, the addition of some incredibly innovative chefs who have made San Antonio their home.
Also, some of this has been facilitated by a new Culinary Institute teaching/training facility that has taken residence in the trendy Pearl Center area just north of downtown. San Antonio which used to have primarily Tex/Mex restaurants, a few traditional South Texas steak houses and some Chinese restaurants has really blossumed in the last few years. Now we have South American steak houses, Thai restaurants, Turkish restaurants, Greek restaurants, French restaurants, Belgium restaurants, micro breweries, a multitude of different Chinese restaurants, steak houses at many different price points, multiple outstanding BBQ restaurants, a variety of different Italian restaurants that are Northern or Southern Italy influenced, many gourmet burger and sandwich shops, also specialty European and Mediterranean influenced restaurants plus some welcoming before dinner and after dinner cocktail and wine bars, plus some wonderful but calorie laden desert cafe places. And I am sure I have overlooked many othere wonderful and varied San Antonio restaurant options. All in all, if as we say here in Texas-you have a hankering for -one type of food it is likely that food option is available here in San Antonio.
