When a reporter friend last weekend went to Big Sur (Monterey County, CA) camping. She went berserk. Rather than enjoying herself she started reporting forest fire and ashes.   I am about 75 miles away north east by car or ~60 miles direct north east of the fire scene. I thought business should be as usual or may be the fire is already put out.  Today, rather than expecting a hot 93 degree F prediction the thermometer registered just 82 deg F at peak. Wait ,why I am coughing and my eyes are irritated?  I looked out wow, the smog is covering most of the sky as far as San Francisco Bay.

The blaze, known as Soberanes Fire, swelled another 738 acres overnight to approx. 52 square miles (33,000 acres).  It has been over a week since the fire started.  I understand there are over 5,000 fireman called in to combat fire and it is only 15% contained. In fact, the fire is growing near Carmel Highlands. Ex-Mayor Clint Eastwood's turf is used as evacuation center.

I suspect central California coast is going to be in flames for weeks. The marine layer from coastal fog can keep the west side cooler at night and before sunrise.  But the fog and smoke seems to slow down the air attack abatement with poor visibility.  The helicopter pilot says these flame can jump 200 ft into the air suddenly when flying over. Blades tend to suck air up. Of the sixty bulldozers at the scene, one bulldozer flipped over killed its operator. So far 52 homes were destroyed.

Unfortunate.  Now the area downstream smells smoke. We were in Hundulas awhile back. The entire Gulf of Mexico was covered with smoke. It even got to 100 miles inland (Houston, Tx).

Arson, camper not careful? Who knows.  Very sad.

That is another reason in high density population area like San Fran Bay Area hillside they do not support housing growth.  People toss out cigarette at freeway exit ofteh starts a few acres of fire.

Thanks for checking in.  We will not get any rain for another 4 montths.

According to this revised assessment this Monterey County conflagration. It may take another ONE MONTH to contain this disaster. Rain will not arrive until November ish.

This is just horrible news. I don't hear about the California Fires so much anymore, but they are awful. I remember watching ashes fall from the sky when I lived there. Prayers headed your way for a quick containment!

SOBERANES FIRE UPDATE: AUGUST 6, 2016 AT 9:30 PM:Flyer with logos

The “Soberanes Fire” started along the Big Sur coast on July 22, 2016 at 8:48 AM.  This wildland fire is generally located south of Carmel Highlands, north of the Big Sur Village, and west of Carmel Valley but is expanding out in several directions beyond these areas. The fire is generally moving east and south, most noticeably east towards the areas of Carmel Valley, Cachagua, and Tassajara, and southeast into the Los Padres National Forest. On August 2, 2016, during a 3:00 PM press conference, CAL FIRE announced the cause of the fire as an “unattended, illegal campfire” that started near the Soberanes  Canyon Trail in Garrapata State Park.

According to CAL FIRE, as of August 6, 2016, at 7:00 PM, the fire has consumed 56,500 acres, of which 22,000 acres are within the jurisdiction U.S. Forest Service, and is now 40% contained. Many miles of dozer containment lines are being constructed to stop the fire’s spread.  A State of Emergency has been declared for Monterey County by Acting Governor Tom Torlakson. The fire remains active at the higher elevations above the marine layer. Total  personnel assigned to the incident is at 5,154 with resources now being released as containment of the fire increases. Highway 1 along the coast as well as Carmel Valley Road remains open. All State Parks between Carmel and Big Sur are closed with the exception of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve which reopened on August 2, 2016 at 8:00 AM.  The U.S. Forest has issued a closure order for all trails and roads in the Los Padres National Forest of the Monterey Ranger District including Milpitas Road, Indians Campground / Memorial Park. Toro County Regional Park and Garland Ranch Regional Park are currently closed.
