Shopping for a new home is very overwhelming to say the least. Taking your young children along with you on your home search can make things a lot more stressful. Let’s take a look at a few ways to survive shopping for a house with your children along for the search.
- IF YOU CAN, LEAVE CHILDREN WITH A SITTER
If you don’t have to take your kids along when you are touring homes on your home search, don’t. If you have a family member or a sitter that you trust to leave your children with, it may be best to do so just long enough for you to tour a few houses. This way you won’t have to worry about any of the following tips and you can more easily narrow your decision down to the house of your dreams.
- KEEP THE KIDS BUSY DURING HOME TOURS
If you do have to have your children along with you during your home tours, do your best to keep them busy while you are talking with your Realtor about the home you are interested in. Pack a bag of fun stuff for your kids to do that will help occupy their time during the tours. Perhaps a few coloring books or books they can look at would be a good option to keep your kids entertained. If they are old enough and have a board game or two, they can play together while you tour each home. All they will need is a spot in the house they can sit and play and you will be free to discuss business.
- MAKE YOUR KIDS EXCITED ABOUT THE NEW HOUSE
If you can explain how important it is that your kids stay quiet during the home tour and what exactly it is that you are trying to do, they may be more willing to do so. Make them excited about buying a new home by telling them all that it will mean for their lives. Show them their potential rooms and discuss decorations with them. If your kids are old enough to understand these things they will be glad to be quiet for a little while during a few home tours.
- MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME DURING HOME TOURS
Make sure that your Realtor knows that it is important that you only hit the most important topics during each home tour so that you can get in and out of each home in a matter of 15 minutes or so. This will make it easier for your children since their attention spans are typically pretty short.
