What better way to mark the soon-to-start school year than with a state sales tax holiday!
For 72 hours, starting August 5 and ending August 7, 2016 school supplies costing up to $15, per item, and clothing up to $60 per item (down from $100 in 2015) will be exempt from state sales tax.
Qualifying items purchased with gift cards are sales tax-free, regardless of when the gift card was purchased. The price of items purchased with promotions of 'buy one get one' free cannot be averaged so that they qualify for exemption.
This year, the list of exempt items includes personal computers and related accessories. Also not exempt is the rental or lease of any otherwise exempt items, and clothing & school supplies sold in theme parks, airports, public lodging establishments & entertainment complexes, school supplies and clothing over the $15 and $60 per item limit, respectively, books not otherwise exempt and the repair or alterations of any exempt item.
The 2016 three day tax holiday is down from last year's 10 day period. Still, Floridians are expected to take full advantage of the savings as area retailers prepare for a very busy weekend.
