Harry Chandler was born in Landaff, New Hampshire back in 1864 to Moses and Emma. He received his education at Dartmouth College. While attending Dartmouth on a dare he jumped into a vat of starch that had frozen which led to severe pneumonia. He moved to Los Angeles for his health.
He worked at various jobs including the fruit fields. He started a small delivery company that soon became responsible for delivering many of the city’s morning newspapers. The publisher at the time Harrison Otis liked what he saw so he hired him as the Times general manager. When Otis died Harry took over the reins and as they say the rest is history.
No questions just the facts so here we go, are you ready? He had boundless energy (like me) which he transformed to Los Angeles. He was directly involved in the founding of the following: The Los Angeles Coliseum, bringing the 1932 Summer Olympics to L.A., the Biltmore Hotel, the Douglas Aircraft Company, the Hollywood Bowl, The Ambassador Hotel, the California Institute of Technology and many more. However, you may be asking yourself what has this to do with real estate. Well now you’re in luck he was an investor in the San Fernando Valley as well as the Holly wood Hills. His other real estate investments were Mulholland Drive, Dana Point and the Tejon Ranch, the Vermejo Park Ranch and the C&M Ranch. At one time he was heavenly invested or owned the largest private landowner in the U.S. he was also an officer or director in thirty-five California corporations including oil, shipping and banking. He died in 1944 of a heart attack
