As a genuine tourist mecca San Antonio has many wonderful hotels and several charming and unique older hotels. One of my favorites is the grand and historic St. Anthony Hotel. Recently (2015) this stunning old hotel has been totally refurbished and is more impressive than ever. This magnificent hotel has hosted Presidents Eisenhower and Johnson, General Douglas MacArthur, Eleanor Roosevelt, John Wayne, Princess Grace, Judy Garland, Lucille Ball and a host of other famous individuals. I personally attended the presidential campaign kick off of Governor John Connally there and the hotel pulled out all the stops for this event as it does for so many other events.

Originally opened in 1909 by owners, B. L. Naylor and A. H. Jones, it was according to the hotel pr the first fully air conditioned hotel in the world. The St. Anthony is well known for its beautiful Peacock Alley walk way where locals and tourists alike mingle and enjoy drinks and people watching. Also, the hotel was formerly known for it local private business club enclave - the St. Anthony Club. The St. Anthony Club was long known as major San Antonio business activity hub. The St. Anthony Club was originally decorated by legendary interior designer Dorothy Draper. Recently with the renovation the hotel has added a beautiful Sky Terrace with exceptional views of downtown San Antonio. The hotel has 277 guest rooms. The hotel is now part of the Luxury Collection with Westin.

The St. Anthony hotel is close to the Majestic Theatre, the newly opened Tobin Performing Arts Center, The Buckhorn Museum and it is only 3 blocks from the Alamo. While not on the San Antonio River walk the hotel is only a few blocks away.

All the all, the St. Anthony is a magnificent architectural gem which also happens to be hotel.
