With all the progress in technology and Ecommerce, several professions are in the brink of extinction, librarians, grocery and post office clerks have been partially replaced with check out machines, banks and schools continue to apply more and more technology, using virtual terminals and classrooms, Skype and face time are being used to learn languages, interact with doctors, teachers, coaches etc.
Telecommute is now available in government agencies, allowing thousands of employees to work from home, saving money and reducing pollution working from their own computers and collaborating online.
And every few years our profession faces the threat of extinction too. With the widespread use of DIY listing service, flat fee brokers and free social media platforms, just about anybody feels like an expert and part genius, saving the 6% commission paid to real estate agents, and paying only a fraction as low as 1.25% of the sales price.
Now we have a new threat, the use of VR (Virtual Reality), companies in places like California and NYC have introduced the 3D scanning of houses, offering 360 degree views and 3D layout of homes, using software that allows customers to walk through the house using hand controllers for navigation.
Long distance buyers and celebrities can check out several homes at once without visiting the properties in person. For now the cost of scanning and software is still too high to be offered to the general public, and mostly high end properties offered by brokers catering to million dollar properties are slowly introducing this technology among their clients.
Some experts think VR will be used only as another tool, and others predict VR will take over the entire Real Estate profession making it possible in a few years to buy homes virtually without using an agent.
Still there is no reason to panic, there is a market for about everything, and we'll continue to have clients that prefer the face to face interaction and personal attention that only a Real Estate agent can offer.
How VR will affect you? will you incorporate it into your business? please share.
