How to Shop for Carpeting

I don’t know about you, but shopping for carpeting or any type of flooring can be tricky. You want to make sure the color blends in with your furniture, paint color, and window furnishings. At Sotheby’s Scottsdale, while most homeowners tend to focus on color, there’s so much more that goes into selecting carpeting.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Learn about fiber types. There are natural fibers, such as wool, and the more commonly used synthetic fibers used in wall-to-wall carpet. Don’t assume one fiber is better.

Check the manufacturer’s ratings and warranties. At Sotheby’s Scottsdale, many homeowners don’t think they need warranties. If nothing else, it shows the manufacturer is committed to its product.

Aside from the fibers, look at the quality of the carpet. Weight isn’t as important as you might think. Salespeople sometimes use the argument of a heavier carpet as being a better quality carpeting. At Sotheby’s Scottsdale, I know this isn’t the case.

It’s always good to do your own research and read reviews plus ask friends and family for a carpet recommendation. If you go online, remember, you can’t always believe every review you read. Try to find an impartial writer.

FIND A RETAILER

I know, at Sotheby’s Scottsdale, it’s always good to shop around and ask these questions:

1 - How long has the carpet company been in business?

2 - What does the price include?

3 - Who does the installation?

4 - Are the installers insured?

5 - Ask for references.

It’s tough, though, shopping for carpeting since the quality isn’t always apparent. So, many times, customers end up having to trust the salesperson. It’s also not a good idea to assume a big box store or national chain will have the best deals. Usually, they advertise a lot to make you believe they’re the most affordable.

It never hurts to ask the salesperson for their recommendations. But don’t allow the person to talk you into something you don’t like.

Shop around and get several quotes from two or three retailers. Make sure installation charges and taxes are included.

SELECTION PROCESS

Narrow your carpet choices down to a few style categories. Learn about the pros and cons of the carpeting so you’ll know if it’ll be a fit for your Sotheby’s Scottsdale home.  Don’t base your decision just on looks. In fact, it’s a good idea to take samples home and look at the color under several lighting conditions.

The best advice is not to buy on impulse which is easy to do if you’re under deadline.
