I recently visited the new Wmydah Pirate Ship Museum in West Yarmouth on Cape Cod Ma.
This is a museum that just opened at the end of this past June and showcases some plunder from the only fully authenticated Golden Age pirate shipwreck ever discovered.
The Wmydah, pronounced "Wi-Duh" had been a ship launched in London in 1716. The ship was captured on her maiden voyage by Captain Samuel "Black Sam" Bellamy and his crew of pirates.
The ship was captured in February 1717. Her adventures as a pirate ship were short lived. On the night of April 24, 1717, The Wmydah ran aground off the coast of Wellfleet (town on Cape Cod), then got slapped around by a Nor' easter storm and capsized.
In 1984, the shipwreck was finally discovered just under 14 feet of water and 5 feet of sand. Her loot was slightly more challenging spanning 4 miles under 16-30 feet of water and between 10-50 feet of sand.
Here are a few pictures I took...
A replica of what The Wmydah may have looked like when launched...
Recovered from the wreck. The Sun King Pistol...
A close up of The Sun Kings Handle.
Scurvy really really sucks...
And the the money shot. Actual pirate treasure. Officially the only one ever recovered from the bottom of the ocean.
