Packing for a Pet Friendly Day at the Beach:

Enjoying a day at the beach with your pet should not include an emergency trip to the vet due to heat stroke or dehydration. When preparing for the desert conditions of most sandy beaches consider inlcuding these essentials:

Bring lots of H2O and a bowl

- keeping your pet hydrated with fresh water during a day at the beach is essential to an enjoyable and safe experience and don't forget to bring a bowl. Try to get in the ocean with your pet frequently to help keep them cool and avoid letting them drink the ocean water as it will actually dehydrate them quickly.

Don't forget an umbrella, canopy or tent

- make sure you have a shaded area for your pet to get out from under the sun and a towel or blanket to lie on instead of the hot sand. If your dog is out in the sun for more than just a few minutes at a time consider using a pet friendly sun screen such as Epi-Pet Sunscreen.

Larger breeds and those with dark and heavy coats are more susceptible to heat stroke as are the flat faced breeds(pugs, bull dogs, etc). Monitor your pets condition continually and be aware of how your pet is faring in the heat, if they are panting heavily, their tongue is brightly colored, and their gums are pale, get them off the beach and into a cooler environment ASAP. Prolonged exposure to tempratures above 80ºF / 27ºC can result is canine death is less than 20 minutes.

Pack some tasty treats

- If you intend on bringing a cooler with you on your next beach outing, consider packing some frozen chicken or beef stock ice cubes, blueberries, and or carrots. If you are staying out for more than a couple hours bring some pet food and a food bowl as well.

Dini...a/k/a  Houdini Alpha Hanson knows no fear....get down, off and no are treated the same as "good morning" to his ears....and he LOVES water...though I think Surfing would be a bit beyond his pay grade....thank you for the reminders...Pets can't always tell us how important it is to have water and shade.

Aloha Sally K. & David L. Hanson - If you can pick your dog up and put him on a board he probably could surf. The challenge is getting them on the board. Mahalo for the visit!

Aloha Jennifer Mackay - It's funny how some dogs just dread the water and others cant's get enough, thanks for commenting.

Aloha Jessie Cochran - it's a new category competition for us here in Waikiki. It's going to be fun to watch the sport develop. I heard a cat might be in the field this year. I imagine the event jn Mexico was pretty grand. A hui hou.

Aloha Jeremy K. Frost - Spectators really enjoy all the fun to be had for Duke's Ocean Fest. Thanks for stopping by!

Aloha Belinda Spillman - lol, you are correct, for canines it would be a "hang 8 or 16", mahalo for the visit!

very fun video;

haven't taken my dog to the beach, but it would be a fun adventure.

as it is, DC isn't as close to the beach as I'd like;

appreciate the life Hawaii provides.
