What Do You Think?

At my age, there is very little that offends me. Actually what I heard in this radio ad didn’t so much offend me as it did make me wonder what they were What do you thinkthinking.

This was an ad for a locally owned family restaurant this morning that featured what I suppose were the owner’s family.

A young boy (sounded about 8) said to the father...

“....so we don’t have to listen to your lame A__ ads anymore.”

It was followed up by the mention of a business name to which a little girl (sounded about the same age) said…

“is that the strip club?”

I had to shake my head.

I’m not a prude about those words, and I’ve also been known to have a sailor’s mouth.

But it made me wonder who they were targeting with this ad.

Were they pandering to their target market? Ron and Alexandra Seigel  have cautioned us about our branding and its lasting effects.

Did they think it was cute?

Or...am I out of sync with today’s  new world?

What do you think?

I'm not sure how or why they thought it was cute Donald Urschalitz

Beth Atalay I have to shake my head at what people feel is appropriate to say.

Raymond E. Camp well, I don't think they're concerned about what we think! LOL

Sheila Anderson I used to see ads on television from a major cable company that had their actors using poor grammar.  A big turnoff.

Joanna Cohlan don't get me started on the political ads!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I thought of you both when I heard this ad.  How could they possibly think it was cute.

Kristin Johnston, Waukesha County Realtor 414-254-6647 it's a different world today, isn't it.

Joe Pryor excellent point.  It totally did obscure the message.

Michael Jacobs Someone was laughing but I think they should consider a different approach.

Cody Carmen I agree.  For me,the problem was that it took away from what they were selling...the restaurant.

I think in the rush for some folks turning away from "political correctness," they have made a new art form in being crude and rude.  There is a balance to all things, and the pendalum may be swinging far away from having a little class!

I don't get most of the humor these days Kathy Streib as it seems to have all gone down the wrong path...probably why I don't watch much television anymore!

Uhhhhhh ... no, Kathy Streib ... you're not out of sync.  Just a good example of what Myrl Jeffcoat refers to above ...  and the pendulum swinging way too far ...

Probably would have had a different feeling for you if they weren't kids saying those things.  That's a turn off.

and what they are doing to those kids (if they were kids) in the commercial.. that is so poor and very sad they have to use crap instead of intelligence to market

Dick Greenberg Oh, I doubt they will suffer any damage at all.  It just makes me wonder.

Myrl Jeffcoat I do think we've been seeing the pendulum swing to not caring about what we say or how we say it.

Lisa Von Domek I don't care for it when it's thrown in to "be cool."

Thanks Gene Mundt, IL/WI Mortgage Originator - FHA/VA/Conv/Jumbo/Portfolio/Refi  the  restaurant won't suffer but I really don't like the way the tide is turning.

It would turn me off too, not sure what age would find this attractive, but then I have officially entered that crabby old man stage a while ago.

Like you Kathy my reaction is "what were they thinking" too many people do not think on their own and have people write stuff for them and I see this in the entertainment industry a lot, when you look at how some of them dress for Award Ceremonies, I just shake my had and say the same "what were they thinking"? Hi Kathy.  In a media environment where we have learned to let adds float past without notice, I think they wanted to grab the listeners' attention -- and it worked!

I do not think there is anything cute about having children speak that way. In fact if that's how the business owner raises his kids (with a lack of dicipline) can you imagine how terrible this restaurant must be run? I have no problem with shocking advertisements and in fact often find them amusing but when you involve kids that is crossing the line.

Sounds tasteless to me. I am in agreement with you. People think they are being edgy and/or funny. I don't like it.

In this case, you are not out of sync. I'd think the ad campaign went off track.

It's not funny. Tasteless.

Regardless of what generation you are from.
