As we are saturated with Summer Olympics stats data we turned our focus at home.  My wife and I both develop eye irritation problems.  The mountains when looking at from the bottom of Silicon Valley are now covered with a yellow black cloud.  Wait, we are not going anywhere on the freeway there is a hillside fire near us!

Traffic jam-Silicon Valley  Metcalf hillside fire

This fire is just one of the few local fires that we residents in California have to deal with. So 30 minutes of delay is not even mentioned as we have a train bridge trusses on fire in downtown San Jose. The tar used to paint over the wooden framework creates when ignited created much black smoke the health department issued a warning for people with respiratory problems to stay home.

I also saw the inconsiderate throws out a cigarette out at exist that ignited another local brush fire. The real story is north of here we got the Lake County fire. This fire burned more than 4,000 acres and 175 homes, many of them mobile homes. The blaze followed three that ripped through Lake County in 2015 which destroyed more than 1,300 homes and killed at least 4 persons.

South of Silicon Valley the Big Sur fire which causes the majority of soot, and eye irritatation lost its prority as the 84,000 acres of hill and hard to reach areas.

A conflagration in the Big Sur region just south of here grew more than 2,000 acres to almost 84,000 acres after July 22 a month ago. According to the Cal Department of Forestry, the fire will not be contained (just 60%) until sometime in September.  I am sure 100s of 10,000 of wild life is lost from the Sobranes Fire all from one negligent camper. The bulldozer fireman was the first casualty when it flipped over in fire fighting. I know as a Realtor that banks are having problem getting brokers to go there inspection and do CMAs even with hazard pay.

A few hours south of here Cut Fire burning in the Cajon Pass (San Bernardino Co.) has ignited 37,000 acres( this is 57 square miles!)  Chimney Fire in San Luis Obispo County was still burning and reached a ridge just 3 miles away from Hearst Castle Saturday morning (Blue Cut near Hearst Castle burning). I hope it will be under control soon.

 2016 Summer CA fires

Back at home, I thought our eye irritation and coughing problem is just south of home. This is what the sky looks like north of us in San Francisco Bay.  The haze from all these fires blocked the normal blue sky at Gold Gate Bridge.

Some write and wish us to use rain putting out the fires. We are still three months away for any rain if we get any.  We are still in a severe drought.

Here in Georgia small controlled burns are done each year in sections at a time in forests to stop forest fires.  The fuel that would allow them to burn un controlled is all burned up about a half acre at a time.  It's very rare to have out of control fires in our state even during times of severe drought.  I can think of one in the past 20 years.

Sam Shueh - It's scary to be so close to so many fires and living in the smoke from those fires is really bad for you so stay inside as much as possible.  Now is the time to create an exit plan (out of the neighborhood and area) for your family just in case and if you're all not together (work/school/home), figure out your meeting place, which is out of the area.  Make sure your cars always have 3/4+ of a tank of gas, or charge at all time (no gas pumps or charging stations when the power goes out from a fire).  We have our grab and go bags (medicine/glasses/contacts, valuables, photos, animals, lap tops, phones/chargers, over-night bags), and we can load up in about 10 minutes.  I hope they get these fires under control and out quickly.  Be safe!

Thanks. The city fire hydrant is on my driveway. I have one suit case of essentialls.  CDF is about 1 mile away. Our house has wide streets not on hillside.  It was 1987 during Loma Prieta earth quake I saw a helicopter landed on side of our house-a vacant land (now housing). Our house along with that helicopter showed in national TV news.  Oh boy, did I get calls from relatives urge me to move out of California.

Sam,

It is the season of fires here.  We were on the freeway on Friday, and Ron noticed a fire cloud from the Frye fire which as of now is 10% contained, and SLO as you noted is also battling fires...Luckily our sea breezes are keeping the air clear.  A

My old boss was at large almost every summer briefly.  They lived on Summit Dr- the peak of Santa Cruz Mountain where they get snow in CA and fire threat in the summer.

The family would pack and put their essentials in their SUV and had dogs and cats inside their cages ready to evacuate just about every other summer.

Some of the victims are urban refugees. Up near Clear Lake the victims live in mobile homes to maintain a lower cost life style.   Some causes of fire is arson and much is careless camper fire practice. Big Sur will not look anything like before as 40% not contained over 1 month ago. Still burning til September?

I was in Salinas not far from John Steinbeck's old home. Looking at south it was all black smoke. Fire started like 5 or 6 weeks ago. Steinbeck's mom used to teach a rural school where the big fire started....
