Deck Maintenance

Pressure treated lumber, some times referred to as "green treated" lumber is not the same as maintenance free decking. Treated lumber generally does not need to be painted or stained for up to a year but the main purpose of it being "treated" is to increase it's durability and resistance to wood damaging insects as well as fungus.

Deck Maintenance by Bob Timm

If you want actual maintenance free decking you need to go with composite materials or with metal (generally aluminum), both considerably more expensive than wood. Of course there is the good old fashion cement patio too.

My solution to maintenance free decking... let my kids do the maintenance.

I can see the vast difference between the wood before and after treatment.  It's going to be gorgeous once the job is completed.

We went with a dark stain Myrl Jeffcoat because the deck had some discoloration due to the grill dripping grease on it. I didn't really want to go that dark but now that we did I'm very happy with it.

I have been blessed with amazing children Noah Seidenberg . They learned early that helping around the house is not an option but mandatory. A good share of that lesson was learned when our home was flood ravaged in 2011 and everyone had to do their part to reclaim our lives.

Good morning Bob.  What will you do once they've grown and moved out?

Regretfully that time is not at all far away James Dray . It may be time to move to a condo when the kids move on.

I like the dark paint on the deck, and glad to see your kids helping and enjoying this task.

The dark really came out well Rebecca Gaujot, the Go To Realtor® . We went with the dark because we had some stains from the grill being on the deck. It worked.
