Sarah Tabitha Babbitt was born in Hardwick, Massachusetts back in 1779. In 1793 she became a member of the Shakers at the Harvard Shaker community in Massachusetts. She grew up around the logging industry watch men use the two-men whipsaw. She noticed there was a lot of wasted motion so she set out to find a way to make it easier and stop all the wasted effort what she came up with forever changed the logging industry.

What she invented was the first circular saw ever used in a saw mill back in 1813. The saw was hooked up to a water powered machine to reduce the effort to cut timber. She is also credited for the process of the manufacture of false teeth and an improved spinning wheel head. Being a Shaker she never applied for a patent. It was patented in the United States by two French men three years later when they read about it in Shaker papers.

It is vital to file the papers to patent ones invention to obtain the credit and the weatlh that it creates.

Love this one James, as women in that time period were viewed to not able to comprehend the mechanical world.

James Dray You really caught me with this one! A fun read, no question. Too bad she did not file for the patents, the Shaker Community could be owning a bunch of casinos in Massachusetts right now!

Hi James Dray ,  That's sad that she didn't get a patent.  That's quite a combination of inventions for a lady of that era.

And she couldn't vote. Something like this should have been put in the public domain.

Interesting story of a woman with a very special gift - an inventive mind. Guess life isn't fair - not getting a patent and losing credit for an invention.

What an amazing woman. It's just too bad she let the times and religion stand in her way.

OK...so not the most politically correct comment, but that's how I feel. She should have taken credit for what she did.
