I took a break from my regular life for a few days escaping from the daily necessaries of surburban life and into the slow-moving desert called .... Vacation. I'm not quite sure you're really call this a vacation -- guess it depends on your definition.
I've escaped to the slow-moving quaint town of Twenty-Nine Palms, CA. I'm sitting in my suite at the Holiday Inn Express after having a liesurely morning at the breakfast bar and then the pool. My son (23) and I (57) are taking a few days off together. He's getting married this August. We've taken several little trips like this over the years. We hiked Yosemite for four days last year. We wanted to get one final HURRAH in before he joins the ranks of 'THE MARRIED!' :)
Our plans are just to enjoy some down time, get into Joshua Tree National Park for some hiking and photo ops, catch the opening of IRON MAN and hopefully find a nice place for dinner tonight and tomorrow night. Last night was a bit of an adventure in that respect.
Our first stop was the Hotel Desk to ask for some recommendations. We were given a map of the local eating extablishements with highest grades going to THE RIB, ROCKY's (for Italian) and some other place I can't remember.
We opted for THE RIB because they'd likely have steaks we thought.... Turns out to be a converted Foster Freeze that sells ribs to go with a small area to just eat your stuff there if you want. Not quite what we were looking for. So we thought we'd have to settle for Italian. OK....
ROCKY's turns out to be a Chucky Cheese crammed into a Taco Bell size location. There's kids all over the place, birthday hats, and a line of 20-30 people waiting to order at the walk-up window. At least it was all inside.
Finally settled on Las Palmas serving up Mexican cuisine. The food was delicious and the place was very quiet. The service was adequate and overall we had a good time there at dinner.
We'll be hitting the desert later today so I'll have some pics for you in the next post.
All the best.....
It's a Good Life !
