The past few days have been spent in the car heading west across the beautiful Rocky Mountains to Palisade, Colorado. It's peach season in Colorado and no one grows them better than the wonderful farms in Palisade. CO.
We were lucky enough to pull into
McLean Farms located at 727 Elberta Ave. in Palisade.
The 70 year old co-owner, Lila, helped us with our shopping. Her store was very clean and organized nicely.
She asked me what I planned to so with the peaches and when she found out I would be making jam, peach salsa and canning peaches, she suggested I buy the "seconds" bushels. They just had a few small blemishes where the wind blew the fruit against a branch or small hail stones left their blemishes. All of the "seconds" bushels were half as much as the others. So instead of buying 3 bushels which is what I set for, I bought 6 bushels. At about 25 pounds per bushel, that is about 150 pounds of peaches.
OK, maybe I am a little extreme at times!
Luckily, my friend and colleague Dan Spencer said he will take 2 bushels.
That only leaves 100 pounds of peaches for me to 'put up' before they spoil.
Hmmmm, maybe Craig and I can make another quick trip west!
