I just returned from dinner with one of the young people I have sort of mentored at work. It was an easy and lovely evening and we both enjoyed ourselves. At some point my young friend asked me if I thought she was smart. I was taken back. As I told her we wouldn't be out together unless I thought she was smart. I like smart people and wondered why she asked. Apparently someone from the Boston Symphony Orchestra had made her feel less than for working at Naumkeag, the museum/mansion and gardens where we both work. I hate that. People, good people don't need to make themselves feel better at someone elses expense. Smart people don't wear it, don't promote their own talents, and don't belittle others.
Some of the smartest and kindest folks I have ever known are the ones who do what works for them without fanfare or bravado and never because it is important to anyone but themselves. I call that passion and passion matters.
