This magnificent San Antonio church cathedral is one of the oldest cathedrals in Texas. It was built between 1738-1750 and named for Ferdinand III of Castile. San Fernando is an active church and every week more than 5000 people attend service there.
San Fernando is located in our downtown area just across from the Bexar County Courthouse. Wikipedia lists the church as the 27th oldest church in America and indicates it is the oldest RC cathedral in the contiquous United States.
San Fernando had a number of well known events occur there.
James Bowie was married there in 1831.
In 1836 Santa Anna hoisted the "no quarter" flag from the cathedral's tower just before he began the assault on the Alamo.
The crypt with the remains of Davy Crocket, William Barret Travis and James Bowie plus other heroes of the Alamo is located there.
In 1987 Pope John Paul II visited the Cathedral during his visit to San Antonio.
Architecturally the church is a masterpiece. And the lovely fountains just outside of the cathedral plus its close proximity to the riverwalk make it easy to visit.
There have been a number of upgrades and enlargements to this majestic old church through the years.
Originally enlarged in 1868. The stain glass windows were added in 1920. A major $ 15 million dollar renovation was begun in 2003. And another smaller update occurred in 2011.
All in all San Fernando Cathedral is one of the Alamo city's great treasures.
Both tourists and residents should visit this incredible National Historic Site.
