Yes, It Is Time to Prepare for Lake-Effect Storms

By
Education & Training with Alan Kells School of Real Estate/Howard Hanna Real Estate

Don't delay! Now is the time to prepare for the infamous Lake-Effect snow storms that blow across the Great Lakes.  Most of us who live around the Great Lakes escaped the wrath of Hurricane Hermine but we know what is coming in a few months.

Snow 1

 Sunrise over my back yard

Both the Farmers Almanac and the Old Farmers Almanac, which my dear Mother bought every year, have predicted a colder than normal winter for the northeast.  Yes, it is time to prepare for lake-effect snow storms.

While I was teaching a real estate class last week Dave was busy cutting & splitting wood that he dumped down the basement steps.  We are lucky to own six acres, most of which is wooded.

Firewood

However, all that wood needed to be neatly stacked on the other side of the basement.  Guess who had that job?  Me!

Firewood 2

Let it snow.  We are ready!

But this Labor Day weekend we will enjoy a family picnic on the sandy beach of Presque Isle State Park.

We are still experiencing the effects of the hurricane with some much needed rain; at least, in our area there was not too much damage. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend.

Good morning Mary,

The farm boy in me thinks we will not have that many lake effect storms this year!

As it is up to me to split the wood it also becomes my chore to stack it!

Make yourself an astonishing day.

Hello Mary Yonkers,  You are right, better to have the firewood ready and close to the house.  Lake effect snow in your area can get bad!

Mary- Brrrrrrr!  You're smart to get prepared now and if it's good enough for your mother, then the Farmer's Almanac is good enough for me!

We don't get snow here in Sacramento, other than on the rarest of occasions. Looking at your photos with the snow, the hearth and the woodpile, makes me think it's a delightful way to spend part of Winter.  You'd only need to add a stack of good books and a quilt!

Mary Yonkers

Right Myrl Jeffcoat lots of books and a quilt or two in front of the fireplace with cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows.

It is always important to be prepared, now how many Chords of wood do you go through in a year?? Endre

Sep 03, 2016 02:28 PM
Mary Yonkers

Between one & two cord depending on how often we build a fire, usually two to three times a week.  We enjoy an evening with a fire not necessarily as alternative heat source.

Good morning Mary.  I live in a subdivision where about the only thing (if I had a fireplace) that I could cut down would be the grass.

Aw, we, rather Dave, cuts the grass as well as cutting & splitting wood.   I stack the wood and cut flowers for display.
