Walgreens and Rite Aid to merge
As of February 29, 2016, Walgreens operated 8,177 stores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1901. The Walgreens headquarters office is in the Chicago suburb of Deerfield, Illinois. Walgreen's Retail Pharmacy International Division has pharmacy-led health and beauty retail businesses in eight countries, each focused on helping people look and feel their best.
Walgreens operates 4,582 retail stores, with a growing online presence. In Europe, we are a market leader. Our principal retail brands are Boots in the UK, Thailand, Norway, the Republic of Ireland and The Netherlands, and Benavides in Mexico and Ahumada in Chile.

Rite Aid is one of the nation's leading drugstore chains with nearly 4,700 stores in 31 states and the District of Columbia, with a strong presence on both the East and West coasts.

This makes 17,459 locations worldwide after the merge, which is expected to occur by the end of 2016. There will be great opportunities for grocery stores since at least 500 of their stores will likely be put up for sale in the USA. This will be a huge competitive advantage for companies like Kroger and Albertsons to position well above Publix.
