You can always tell a Texan but you can't tell him much
Texans are an independent breed. The intense self-reliance has breed a people proud of the life built from adversity. The roots of Independence are deep and fertilized by the blood of the Alamo and Goliad. The Independence grew out of building life in the frontier . This can be seen in the rancher, the oilmen and farmer. When you're 20 miles from your neighbor, the fence is mended when you mend it. The cattle are fed when you feed them. You learn to be self-sufficient and self-reliant. No one is going to do it for you. That spirit somehow translated to modern cities into citizens who have no personal history with self-reliance. Texans have built a lifestyle they are proud of and are not shy about telling you.
Texas Rangers, One Riot - One Ranger
Texas Rangers were formed to provide law and order in a land that was sparsely populated, wild and untamed. It is said Rangers had to meet three criteria. You had to be able to ride. You must be able to shoot. You coud not be wanted for a felony in the State of Texas. As a Ranger, you could be alone in enforcing the law. A popular anecdote goes that three Rangers were in a saloon in Laredo. Border towns were known to be rough and raucous. A group of four cowboys strolled in with an attitude and started raising hell. One of the Rangers went over to bring order and a fight ensued between the cowboys and the Ranger. The bar tender asked the other two rangers if they were going to help their friend. They responded, "No. There is only four of them so it is a fair fight." Texans have a strong sense of right and wrong and don't put up with foolishness.
Never ask a person where they are from. If they are from Texas they will tell you. If they aren't, don't embarrass them.
