Moving Forward

We can't rewrite the past. The best we can do is learn from it. We must then go forward.

There are times in my life when I feel like I've stalled. That I'm standing still. I spend too much time on one thing, over thinking, over planning. Meanwhile nothing is happening. I'm stuck. This can happen with something simple such as a writing a blog post, or something much bigger such as personalizing our website. I tend to over think just about everything.

When this happens, I'm reminded of a phrase that I first heard from a colleague. I'm not sure if she was the first one to say it, or if she was quoting someone else.

"Progress...not Perfection"

If I want to get something done, I have to just keep moving forward. I can make changes later if I'm unhappy with the results. This creates a win-win scenario. Work gets done and it leaves time for play, the reward for time well spent.

As I get older (and hopefully wiser) I realize how valuable play time can be. It's good for relationships, my health and my spirit....body, mind and soul!

Today Rich and I are working, so tomorrow we can go to a party for a friend who just remodeled her kitchen. It will be good to see her and her Mom. Oh and did I mention that they are both past clients? Should be a great party! We'll make progress today and we'll play tomorrow. Life is good!

This is my submission for the "I want you to inspire me contest".

Good Afternoon Donna - I like "progress not perfection".  Having accomplished something and moving in the right direction keeps us motivated.  It certainly does for me as well.

Good morning Donna Foerster,

I'm sure you will have a fun time today at the party. The phrase "Progress ..Not Perfection" is a good one to live by. It's good to laugh ....Every day you spend without a smile is a lost day.

It's a good day! We greeted at church this morning. The sun is shining and it's warm. I made a homemade peach cobbler. It's football season AND we're going to see some friends. Doesn't get much better!

One should pick up a project take it to finish line and move on to next one. Those who say they want to do this and that and get nothing started, they have low esteem by others.

Donna, I recently took a CRS class about working with buyers. We discussed the DISC profile. I suspect you're a HIGH C. I know because so is Tom. One of the problems that HIGH C's have is they want everything to be perfect. That perfection keeps them from moving forward.

They do have other wonderful attributes:

What are the general characteristics of the C DISC Styles?

The C DISC Styles are accurate, precise, detail-oriented, and conscientious. They think very analytically and systematically and make decisions carefully with plenty of research and information to back it up. The C has very high standards for both themselves and others. Because they focus on the details and see what many other styles do not, they tend to be good problem solvers and very creative people.

What do the C DISC Styles contribute to a team?

The C style brings perspective to groups and tend to be the "anchor of reality" in team thought. When something is proposed, it is the C who will think through every detail of how it works and the process. They will make realistic estimates and will voice the problems that they see with the plan or already existing system. The C is conscientious and even tempered. They will complete tasks they've committed to and will be very thorough. They take great pride in doing their work accurately and are excellent people to analyze, research, or test information.

My mind is very active and I tend to over think things, so I often change my mind about how I feel about a project, that stalls the progress also!

That's surprising to hear. I am a high DI and yes Tom is a SC. We also get along great. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my listings and that's about it.

Tammie White

I'm very familiar with the DISC profile and I'm not a C. As a matter of fact I'm a high DI and Rich is the poster child for SC. That's why we make a great team! Not sure were the perfection part comes in to play. I can also be a bit of a control freak.

As a recovering perfectionist I enjoyed the sentiment of your  post!  I live by my checklist and every morning review exactly what I'm going to get checked off.  Without my list, I'd be stuck in the quicksand of trying to control everything and have it all be perfect, making no progress whatsoever.  Hope you enjoyed your party!

I've tried to work with checklists but I end up having about 3-4 of them! More recently I've decided I just need to determine what I need to do today. What are the top 3 things, big or small that I need to do today and whatever else gets done is gravy!
