West Maui beach access situation is improving with a database

Access to West Maui beaches is getting easier with an online database that will be an ongoing project.  Recent attention on this matter has caused the County of Maui to get serious about enforcing public parking spots at the resorts.  Time limits on the public parking zones are also not legal, though some resorts post signs stating the time limits.

Read the Maui Time article about how this unfolded this spring.

A group called the HK West Maui Community Fund has been formed to create the online database, and they're asking for the public's help to provide more documents that might be stored with home owners.

Here's the website that is compiling the West Maui shoreline access database.

In Hawaii all the beaches and shoreline are for public use and there are rules regarding public access points, meaning that the beaches should always be accessible.  Unfortunately, over time these tend to get buried under development and forgotten.  Luckily there are written records that prove what should be preserved for future generations.

Georgie, this looks like it might be a tough one to follow up on.  Has to start somewhere though.  Mark
