This post was inspired by an out of state caller from Utah. She was considering relocating to Los Angeles and wanted to open a Kennel. She asked if I could give her answers what the Zoning requirements are. Needless to say I am still waiting for her email:))
This of course made me do some research, as it turns out the intent of Los Angeles Animal Services is to enforce the standards of care for animals in Kennel Facilities. The purpose is to ensure that there is a uniform and humane treatment of all animals and safeguard the public interest as well.
This is achieved by the provisions of the Los Angeles Municipal Code Section 53.50. To give you an idea, there are about 30 points i.e.: The Standard and Requirement for Poof:
- Prominently display a copy of the LA Animal Service official permit to operate a kennel.
- All dogs must have current rabies vaccinations and have copies of current rabies vaccination proof for each dog.
- Maintain copies of all medical records for any permanent pet resident that has ongoing medical issues.
- Restrict the entry of pest from outside and implement pest control measure to control infestation of vermin, insect or other pests.
- Provide Artificial light in a manner that permits routine inspection of clean and and proper care and maintenance of the animals.
The list goes on and on and it is all geared to protect the animals, you get the idea. The standards are strict and they cover a myriad of point including food and water handling. Also focused on how to remove animal and food wastes, including bedding.
These rules are all done to protect the animals. So with that said if you are still interested in starting a Kennel please reach out to me and I will find you a properly zoned location.
I also mentioned that relocating from Utah has a huge sticker price shock that calls for a mental adjustment, because the Los Angeles Property Values are more astronomical compared to Utah.
My intent is not to discourage but I want you to come in with open eyes about the price as well as the restrictions to open a Kennel in Los Angeles.
