Five Scents to Use When Selling Your Home

The last time I blogged, I talked about odors you should avoid in your North Scottsdale home for sale. Today, I’m going to share research about scents that make sense.

The smell in your home can determine whether a potential home buyer will keep looking or walk out altogether. Odors that you should get rid of include “cooked food, home appliances, clothing and shoes, pets and smoke.”

But there are good odors that will attract buyers in your North Scottsdale home for sale. You might think the traditional baked cookies or scented candles will do the trick. But what if the buyer doesn’t like sweets or doesn’t like the scent of the candle? Or the buyer might think you’re covering up another smell.

First, it’s important to have a clean home. Cleaning your North Scottsdale home for sale on a regular basis helps in staying on top of a stale air smell. But when it comes time to sell, clean your entire home from top to bottom. If you don’t want to do it, hire someone.

CITRUS

If you’re going to introduce any scent into your home, go with a simple orange or lemon scent. A 2013 study found shoppers spent almost 32% more money in a home decor store scented with a citrus scent.

HERBS

Scented herbs can be an inviting, fresh scent when walking into a North Scottsdale home for sale. Rosemary, thyme or basil all work well in creating a warm feeling.

VANILLA

Vanilla generates a cozy feeling. Burn a vanilla candle or use vanilla beans or extract to create your own scent. Almond or mint extract also have a fresh scent.

GREEN TEA

Green Tea is associated with restoring harmony. So put on a kettle before your buyers arrive.

PINE AND CEDAR

These two trees create an intense aroma but are nice to use during the holidays or winter months. However, this scent might not be the best to use for a beach home or a home that’s not in the woods.

PRODUCTS TO USE

Now, you might be asking yourself what products should you use to introduce these scents.

Candles

Candles placed throughout your North Scottsdale home for sale can quickly freshen up the air. The goal is to hide the candle so remove candle wrappers and place inside other decorative pieces. However, it’s ok to display a candle if it fits in with your other decor.

Reed Diffusers

These work great in the bathroom but can be overpowering, at times, in small rooms. So you’ll want to monitor and maybe remove the diffuser from time-to-time.

Simmer Pots

The fragrance from simmer pots goes throughout your home. Just mix a few scented ingredients with water in a pan on the stove.

Deodorizing Disks

Disks are good to use in smaller areas like a laundry basket or maybe under your sink.

Potpourri

Dried petals and spices make up potpourri that can easily be displayed in a bowl or small bags around the home.

Oil plug-ins

These scented plug-ins usually last 30 days and work good in the entryway and hallways.

Once you get rid of the bad odors and introduce good ones, have some friends come over and get their opinion.
