Sophia Cecilia was born in Manhattan back in 1923 to George and Evangelia. Her parents are a whole different issue as they were not compatible other than having children. Her father was laid back while her mother was demanding and controlling. At around the age of three her mother noted Sophia singing and recognized a talent. At the age of five her mother forced her to sing and she hated it.
With her parents’ marriage deteriorating her mother moved to Athens in 1937. The relationship between her and her mother was not a good one. it was reported that Sophia was forced to work or sing by her mother. She wrote about the experience saying, “My sister was slim and beautiful and friendly, my mother always preferred her. I was the ugly duckling, fat and clumsy and unpopular. It was a cruel thing to make a child feel ugly and unwanted.”
In 1950 she took her mother along with her to Mexico in an attempt to repair the relationship, it didn’t happen and she never spoke to her mother again. BTW if you don’t recognize the name let’s try Sophia Cecelia Kalos better known as Maria Callas. She is recognized as one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Sadly, she died in 1977 from a heart attack. So much talent so little time.
