Ask an Ambassador - With Change Comes Attitude Adjustments

Change is happeningWhy have there been so many changes over the years with the ownership, staff, formats, points and structure on ActiveRain? Everything happens for a reason and since I have been around these parts I have seen huge changes. Many have been good changes.

When I first started about 5 years ago points were so hard to get. You made a comment and got a few points added to your account. Along the way staff realized more interaction was needed and they encouraged involvement by upping the points for comments and the number of comments that would warrant points.

Entering contests 5 years ago awarded you about 500 points or less. Now they have big rewards and there are several to choose from each month. Staff realized that members like points and so have restructured the points system along the way to feed the thirst for points. The Q&A section was added and many members loved it. This has turned into a favorite feature for some of the members. Again the staff has responded to the wishes of the members by accelerating the path to free membership for those that sign up.

Ownership has changed many times over the years. Sometimes it was welcomed and other times it incited the membership and some members fell away. But last year, Ben Kinney (an ActiveRain Member and Real Estate Powerhouse) stepped up and bought ActiveRain from Zillow Group and our membership rejoiced. Ben believed that it needed to be back in the hands of people in the real estate trenches and he wanted to make it the best that it could be for the members.

Bob Stewart was brought back and shares the vision along with Ben Kinney. Plans for a redesign of the site and making ActiveRain a resource and training source for those in the real estate business are now becoming reality. ActiveRain University branched off a few months ago to start its growth and dominance on the web. Now the first of the changes for the site redesign has been launched and more changes are planned. These new changes have gone into effect almost seamlessly.

When change comes so do some bumps in the road, call them growing pains if you will. Embrace the changes and don't be afraid to give your feedback. The owner and staff want to hear what you like and what needs future improvements. If there is a technical glitch, let Bob Stewart know. If you have a new idea by all means share it. They want to make ActiveRain the best it can become. This is your network.

Be open-minded and embrace the change. Change is not happening for the sake of change. It has been carefully thought out, planned and invested in. There is more to come. If you are having a hard time with accepting change, try an attitude adjustment or at least give it a try before you complain.

Think positively. There has been a history of lots of complaining about glitches, changes and formats in the past. We are entering new territory with a well designed platform that will send our posts into the great blogsphere and the World of Google. I expect tremendous things to come and it is just starting. Will you embrace the changes coming?

Good morning Debbie. I too have seen many changes. I like and respect Bob and am glad he is back. That said this change seems more complicated in getting where I am used to going quickly.

HI Debbie.  I think human beings are wired to resist change. Otherwise we would be like the dog in "Up!" (Squirrel!), constantly distracted by each new thing.  Change is inevitable and necessary, but still disconcerting most of the time.

Once the new AR format becomes familiar, I think the membership will embrace it.  It seems well thought out and attractive.

Thanks, Debbie, for sharing your positive perspective on the ActiveRain changes.

I still need a lesson on the reasoning and the use of the featured photograph.

Debbie, I think for the most part the changes have been really good. Change is needed for progress and while there might be glitches they all get worked out. I think they did a great job communicating about the changes this time.

I really like the new look and platform thus far. I realize it takes a bit to get things running smoothly.

I don't mind the changes here and think the site looks good. I do miss the "review" feature when writing blog posts -- maybe I'll learn from Bob Stewart if that might be making a come-back?

I really like the new lay out. Especially on my iPad. I haven't noticed any glitches so far and long as I can continue posting and commenting without problems I'll be a happy camper. Change is good. It means the powers that be care enough to invest in the AR platform and make it better for its users.

I originally joined ActiveRain back in the day because I was told that it would increase my Internet traffic from prospective buyer's and seller's.  I am not sure that has actually happened and it seems like the changes being made will certainly benefit those that get their posts featured, unfortunately, I am not one of those people.  Oh well, I seem to have made some friends here, so I have that going for me, even if my business isn't improved as a result of being in the Rain.

Hi Debbie - You and I started about the same time and have shared the journey. I think we're in a better place now than ever before, and I never minded the glitches that comes with change - somehow, they always get fixed.

I hope you will blog about the proper use of the new featured image option. Is this supposed to be different from images in the blog? Why is the image so large and no place to add a description?

Debbie ten years ago reaching the 100,000 point mark was a major mile stone.  that took a lot of blogging and commenting.  Today that total is easily reached within a three month period.

I have been here through all the changes, and as you said many of them have been good, but some times I miss the old less complicated AR :)

Hi Debbie

This is a terrific post given what's going on right now. I personally have pretty happy with the changes, despite still figuring a few things out. There are have so any changes since I first joined, and some have gone more smoothly, and been more effective, than others. It has gotten quite a bit more complex, in many ways, but so has blogging and the Internet in general.

We can all help by sharing issues and concerns with AR, as well as the answers to the many questions about the NEW AR on the Q and A to help each other out!
