As a Realtor who enjoys and appreciates historic homes and who has completed the Historic Home course from the National Trust it is a distinct pleasure to live in a city with so many magnificent, historic neighborhoods filled with unique one of a kind historic homes. One special neighborhood in San Antonio is the Monte Vista historic area. This area is actually composed of 14 areas with Monte Vista being the largest and most well known. The area was developed between 1890 and 1927 and is about 1 1/2 miles north of downtown San Antonio. In its heyday many of San Antonio's most prominent and wealthy citizens called Monte Vista home. And many of our city's most well known architects were involved in designing homes in the area including Atlee Ayres, Adams and Adams, Carvel and Co., and Ralph Cameron. Monte Vista is often referred to as the Alamo's city's most famous historic neighborhood and while it is subject to opinion it does have some exceptional architectural gems. When I was younger and had more time I would often drive the area enjoying the wide range of home's architecture which included Georgian, Moorish, Greek Revival, Victorian, and French among many others. Monte Vista is home to approximately 3000 people today and is bound by Ashby St. in the south and Hildebrand on the north with San Pedro on the west. The area has had its ups and downs but the years have been kind and young buyers appreciate each one of the various home's uniqueness. And as a friend says, "Does the home have electrical, plumbing, roofing and foundation issues - Yes but it also has charm."
