Buying Both Home and Location Matters

By

Making a buying mistake on either the home or location may lead to financial problems and/or cause homeowners to have an unhappy experience.  When buying, all buyers should consider a number of factors prior to making their final decision.  Couple factors you should realize upfront: you can modify the structure, but you cannot change the location.  Always consider buying in the best location you can afford, but at the same time do not buy the most expensive house in that location.  You want to be in a situation where other homeowners’ values are helping your financial value appreciate faster.   A house is both a home and investment, and when shopping for your home, look for a property that offers the most future improvement.  Many times it may be better to choose a great location with a poor house than to buy a great home in a poor location.  Buying a great home in an iffy neighborhood where crime and drug problems exist, maybe dangerous both to you and your finances.  If not sure of a neighborhood there are several ways to find information about the neighborhood:  review sales date, if sold data is less in the area does not mean it is a good value, verify crime and sexual predator records for the neighborhood, visit with neighbors and business owners in the area, and finally evaluate the types of businesses that are in the area.  Finally visit with the police and get police reports on businesses in the area, this will help you make the right decision.

John, I think you brought up a good point. What could be worse than buying a house you love but are really disappointed in the neighborhood.
