A 10-Minute Self Promotion Tip

By
Real Estate Agent with Front Gate Real Estate Broker 11085

Here's an easy self-promotion tip you might want to implement in your area. My newest listing is in an older development that requires a certain type mailbox with the post painted a specific shade of green. I keep a gallon of paint on hand, and whenever I list a home in this neighborhood, the post gets a fresh coat of paint. It's a 10 minute investment that yields maximum benefits. (And yes, I can paint the post in 10 minutes!)

Some Realtors may think it isn't our "place" to do this. I've seen arguments  discussions for either side saying we shouldn't water the grass, gather the mail or perform other menial tasks for the seller.

Why not? The seller appreciates it, the neighbors see me working in the neighborhood and it gives me the opportunity to pass out flyers and business cards.

They recognize me as the go-to Realtor of the neighborhood. And that's fine by me.

What about you?

Do you have tips that set you apart from the crowd that you're willing to share? Let's brainstorm and see if we can grow our business with some creative ideas.

I'm a fan of some of the menial tasks! I believe it shows true commitment to a seller, and they like it! I love that the neighbors get to see you out there, showing some love to the mailbox post! I would bet no other agent in your area would do that.

Cheryl Dukes - Premier Luxury Marketing Consultant - Atlanta - Yes! Almost everyone knows me in the neighborhood, and if they don't, the sign in the yard is a dead giveaway. :)

Sally K. & David L. Hanson - I agree it doesn't work everywhere, but in this neighborhood with the color-specific requirements, it works. Perhaps not a Picaso, but more of a handy-gal. :)

Travis "the SOLD man" Parker; Associate Broker - I'll take brilliant! Maybe you can adopt a similar idea in your market area.

Woody Edwards - Thanks. Thinking outside the box is what I do. :)

Anna Hatridge - I showed a vacant house yesterday. The listing agent put crotons and birds of paradise at the front porch. They were parched. My buyer client and I watered them before we left. Maybe the universe will give us some good karma for that one.

DALIA KIBBY - It's true. Absentee owners often need more help with these small jobs. We do what we need to do within reason. Big jobs should be hired out, of course, but appreciative clients (and sold houses) make it all worthwhile.

Alyse "Aly" Sands - Agreed. No-one wants their efforts to be taken for granted or have their services taken advantage of. Not all agents are willing to take the extra steps in customer service.

Great idea!

I am sure you have gotten it down to a science to paint the post quickly and efficiently.

And we always say that paint offers the most bang for the buck! In this case, it's right there in the front of the house for all to see! :)

Nope not for me, you can do it. I've got my own chores to do.

I stopped this when sellers started taking advantage or demanding things. I remember that a seller demanded that I go start the car each week in the garage. Is that in the listing agreement?

Think not.

Sarah, John Rummage - It helps that I live in the neighborhood and everyone knows my name. :) And you really can freshen a mailbox in 10 minutes.

Lyn Sims - I understand your point of view. Nothing is worse than a demanding client who expects us to do certain things. If I felt taken advantage of, I wouldn't do it. But appreciative, grateful clients make it worthwhile, and my repeat business supports it.

Awesome tip! Put the sign up first. Then do the painting. May get more response if you took a bit longer to paint. Thanks for sharing.

Pat, I think it's a brilliant idea, I like what  Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland suggested, put up the sign first and take longer than 10 minutes.

That is a great idea.  It helps to make the neighborhood look a little nicer, neighboors remember who sold that house, and it is a perfect way to keep top of mind.

Being a guy from a small, older town ... I give this act  of kindness and "distinguishment" a thumbs up, Pat Starnes !  It's memorable ... and it makes a difference.  A "win win", I think ...

Not all agents work the same, and as such, you will have both those that agree with doing work and those that dont.  I don't see anything wrong with it

Hi Pat! I came over from Winston Heverly 's reblog of your post.  It is a great idea and anytime we can do something outside the box, it is a win for us! I would add that you could also have someone take a photo of you painting the mailbox post and share it on FB so others will know who you are and what you do that is extra!
