Never to be experienced again !

My training for the International Selkirk Loop WaCanId Bicycle Ride, which included the 'Chafe 150', was quite the learning experience.  And surprisingly enough this picture represents more than just the half way point of my 'Chafe 150' (80 mile ride for me).  It is something I will never experience again.

What does a half way marker for an 80 mile ride have to do with Real Estate?

Everything !

While a welcome sight to see I was not as elated as I should have been.  In fact somewhat apprehensive.  No one in front of me, no one behind.  Then I realized.  While this sign represented the half way point, of the ride, it more importantly was exactly the same distance further than I had ever ridden as well as having that same amount to go again before actually reaching a point, in distance, where I had ridden before.  I was in my own personal 'No Man's Land'.  Almost like being in the middle of a lake with no shore visable.

At this point I needed to focus on the fact I had trained as best I could.  Taken all the small steps needed.  Got 'lucky' along the way because I had indeed done the work.  I needed faith in myself that the work I had done to this point was going to see me through, not only this small 14 miles of my 'No Man's Land', but also to the end of the ride.  Most importantly I needed enjoy the moment.  I would never again experience this moment and circumstances.

Most of us have set Real Estate Goals.  We have set plans and chunked them down to daily activities to achieve those goals.  We do not get from that point of starting and planning, to the achievement of those goals without consistent focus and committment.  We all will reach the all important point of feeling as though we are in our own 'No Man's Land'.  That is when personal confidence is most important, because it is only 'our' efforts that push to the finish line or proposed goal.

All the Real Estate coaching, seminars, instruction, encouragement is important.  Bottom line, there is only one person who will get the work done and achieve the goal set forth.  In this particular case, for me, it was continuing forward on the bicycle knowing the miles would pass.  My goal would be achieved, and that I had done the proper planning and work to make it possible.

Follow me over the course of a few posts and the Selkirk International Loop WaCanId Bicycle Ride 2016 to see how I relate it to Real Estate practices.

Hi Mark

That is quite an accomplishment! And a good analogy for the real estate business. I enjoyed reading your thoughts about the event and your business.

Enjoy your weekend!

Hello Mark

Great post and great job! Like I may have mentioned before I use to ride 150 Iron-man bike rides, 100 mile, etc, but that was when I was at a much younger age.

I can't imagine doing it now and VB's hat goes off to you ...

Vegas,  I have to admit I was/am pretty pleased with this ride and the WaCanId of which I have yet to post.  They were accomplishments I wanted this year and have never ridden bikes before this year.  Other than the going to school type riding.  Not bad.  M

Mark, great blog and analogy to real estate.

I believe half way point is much harder to reach than the finish line. It is the point where one is all alone and has to focus on  its goal. So easy to fall back when pain and hardship start to compound. Congratulations on your race and for checking off your to do list.

Mark,I can relate I have walked the Avon Breast Cancer 39 miles for the last 3 years in September. It's really what keeps me going, knowing that i"m in the 17 mile or the 20th and I must keep going. I also trained hard, thought about how I was going to do it everyday I never took it for granted and made all 39 miles in 2 days! 26 day 1 and 13 day2. My point is the same as yours I'm a new agent butI'm learning quickly if I don't train, practice and think about it every day I won't get where I need to go... Thanks for reminding me.

Mark- you have put into words something I've felt on a much smaller scale.  Once when walking around the Green Cay boardwalk, I was tired and reached the half-way point.  All I could focus on was how much more I had to go.  No matter which way I turned, there was no short cut.

Love your story, while I have ridden that distance before, It is a daunting feeling knowing where you are and how much farther you have left.

Mark, reading this reminds me of the time I agreed to join a team at the law firm I was working for (a long time ago) and run the Bay to Breakers.  I had not trained the way I should have.  I had blisters on my feet and could not wear shoes for a week or so.  The joy and exhilaration of finishing the race ... was a feeling I will never forget.

Sometimes though, riding the bike can be more fun than real estate for sure.

I think the hardest thing is to live in the moment, no past, no future just to be and enjoy that moment or even just experience it. Well done. Weather looked beautiful for a nice long bike ride.

Wow, what a great ride. I'd be dead on the side of the road.

But you bring up a great point that we have to get off the wheel to congratulate ourselves. Gives us fulfillment but as in your case our goal can make you apprehensive at the same time.

Good for you, Mark. That's a long way. I trained for the marathon a long time ago, but my best distance was 10 miles - about 3 times a week - total of 30 miles. Now I WALK at least a mile every day - so it would take me 30 days to go that far. But steady gets the job done too!
