Sunrise Over Independence Pass Colorado September 2016

Unless I'm in a hurry, I don't like taking the most direct route. There's always something to explore, and I like revisiting places I haven't seen in a while. Recently I had to travel for our annual Colorado REALTOR® Convention. It's a five plus hour trip for me.

western colorado fall color drive informationI had to take the fastest way there, but I made it a two day trip while coming home. Snow had just fallen in the higher elevations and there was a dusting of it on the peaks.

On the first day I stopped in Leadville. This town sits at 10,200 feet above sea level. The air doesn't have a lot of oxygen at this elevation, and I could feel it while I was walking around the town. The mountain views are beautiful all around Leadville and it was a scenic trip heading this way south of I-70.

This morning was extra special. I hit the road before dawn to see the sun come up on Independence Pass near Aspen. This is the highest paved highway in the state and the elevation at the top is 12,095 feet. State Highway 82 crosses the Continental Divide at the top.

western colorado fall color drive informationThis might be the only fall color drive I have time for this season, and doing it at dawn added an interesting twist. It was a beautiful morning, but a bit cold. The temperature at the top was 19 degrees.

Once I started down from the top, I really felt like I was on the top of the world. You can see that in the second picture. The clouds hid everything and it was the road, me and the sky.

western colorado fall color drive informationOnce I got a few miles down the pass, the trip into Aspen was full of fall color. It's nice to see the recent storms didn't cause the trees to dump their leaves. There is still plenty of color to be seen.

Independence Pass is beautiful. If you can't get away, though, there are plenty of really nice fall color drives closer to Delta County.

Hi, Kathleen Daniels ...that pre dawn driving experience and some good tunes on the stereo for part of that drive was amazing. Then getting to the top of the pass and seeing the sights was also amazing and very spiritual. Although I was exhausted from being at the state convention, this trip back was worth it.

I got home at 11am and went to bed. I even missed the first half of the Broncos football game. I was that tired.

Hi, Sharon Lee ...the best colors are usually around the middle to the third week of September. You will love the drive and I will be your guide. Let me know what way you plan to come so I can tell you where to go. Then when you get here...it will be another tour.

Hi, Evelyn Johnston ..the time was barely there, but I did enjoy them. I was exhausted after the state convention, but I had to get home. When I finally did, I went to bed right away.

Hi, Lou Ludwig ...I believe that life is something to be experienced and something in which to make your own experiences. I like the road less traveled and being unconventional (different). I don't always have the time I want for myself, but when I do...I try to make the most of it.

I will be selfish and take time for myself and wander off the beaten path to explore and spend time with myself.

Debbie Reynolds ...I think we need to do an AR general membership meetup in Colorado during the fall. I will help plan the event. We could do it in Grand Junction.

Hi, James Dray ...our weather is changing very quickly here. We got warm for a few days, and now it's back to rain and snow in the higher country. It's going to get really cool now.

It was an amazing morning, Brian England . It was a special day in the mountains and experiencing sunrise after a fresh snow was really nice.

Hi, Dick Greenberg ...Until last weekend, I hadn't been over this pass in many years. The last time I traveled this pass, I climbed Mount Evans and Mount Massive. Those kind of climbing days are behind me now, though. It was amazing drive to take at sunrise. The new snow made the roads crappy for a few miles, but the lighting and views were worth it.

Hi, Laura Cerrano ...you have no idea how fragile everything is at this elevation. You should take a visit out this way and experience. Even the air is fragile. There isn't much of it at this elevation.

I have taken that route and it is beautiful. I loke the Durango narrow gauge this time of year also to see the fall folliage and the aspens turning can be awe inspiring.

Hi, Joe...the falls colors are really nice here as they are in a lot of places. I like the trip down to Durango, too. Red Mountain Pass is not only very scenic, but fun to drive. Thanks for stopping by.
