Unless I'm in a hurry, I don't like taking the most direct route. There's always something to explore, and I like revisiting places I haven't seen in a while. Recently I had to travel for our annual Colorado REALTOR® Convention. It's a five plus hour trip for me.
I had to take the fastest way there, but I made it a two day trip while coming home. Snow had just fallen in the higher elevations and there was a dusting of it on the peaks.
On the first day I stopped in Leadville. This town sits at 10,200 feet above sea level. The air doesn't have a lot of oxygen at this elevation, and I could feel it while I was walking around the town. The mountain views are beautiful all around Leadville and it was a scenic trip heading this way south of I-70.
This morning was extra special. I hit the road before dawn to see the sun come up on Independence Pass near Aspen. This is the highest paved highway in the state and the elevation at the top is 12,095 feet. State Highway 82 crosses the Continental Divide at the top.
This might be the only fall color drive I have time for this season, and doing it at dawn added an interesting twist. It was a beautiful morning, but a bit cold. The temperature at the top was 19 degrees.
Once I started down from the top, I really felt like I was on the top of the world. You can see that in the second picture. The clouds hid everything and it was the road, me and the sky.
Once I got a few miles down the pass, the trip into Aspen was full of fall color. It's nice to see the recent storms didn't cause the trees to dump their leaves. There is still plenty of color to be seen.
Independence Pass is beautiful. If you can't get away, though, there are plenty of really nice fall color drives closer to Delta County.
I've lived on Colorado's Western Slope for over 26 years. I love this area and all it has to offer, and I enjoy sharing what I know about my home. As a REALTOR®, I also love to share my expertise in this area as well. If you need any real estate information for Montrose County, or Delta County, Colorado...please give me a call.
