5 Great Things About Texas Newcomers Should Know

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Cortiers Real Estate

After thinking about it for some time, you have made the decision to move to Texas. Whether you were approved for the job transfer you were hoping for or you were motivated to live closer to — or maybe further away from — family members, the Lone Star State is eagerly awaiting your arrival. While moving can be a stressful experience, there is so much to look forward to in your new home state.

People are really nice

Hospitality and Texas go hand in hand. Drivers wave at each other, doors are opened for others and people smile and say hello to strangers. When you move into your new place, chances are your new neighbors will come by to say howdy and welcome you with open arms to the area. This marvelous sense of hospitality is both positive and reassuring, making it hard to be anxious about a move when everyone there is so happy to see you.

Real estate is affordable

Texas is huge, and there is plenty of land. Because there is so much real estate here, notes Moving to Texas, it is naturally less expensive than in many other parts of the country. Granted, there are places where the prices are higher, but many people who move here are pleasantly surprised to learn that they can sell their former home and buy something just as nice for less money.

Outdoor activities abound

If you love the outdoors, you will adore living in Texas. From camping to hiking to going on road trips to check out marvelous scenery, the state is chock full of incredible opportunities to get out, get active and explore. The Lone Star State is home to Natural Bridge Caverns in San Antonio and Palo Duro Canyon in Amarillo, where you will find ample places to hike, mountain bike, kayak, fish, canoe, camp and more. Before you head out on your outdoor adventure, whether its to a local fishing hole or a campground, make sure you're equipped with the essential outdoor gear you'll need.

Low taxes

Texas does not have a personal income tax or corporate income tax, so you probably won’t have to give the tax man as much of your hard-earned money as you did in your prior state. However, keep in mind that Texans pay for services in other ways — the state has a sales tax and property tax that are on the high side. But thanks to the overall low cost of living and reasonable costs on real estate, most people still come out ahead.

Schools are great

Texans are proud of their strong education system and numerous state colleges, including Texas A&M, Baylor, Rice University and University of Texas. The state has a solid high school graduation rate and is well known for taking care of its students who are economically disadvantaged.
