Is Oregon's economy too strong?

“In 2008 we had a growth problem, because growth was down. Now the problem is it’s almost too strong.”

So said Portland State University Economist Dr. Tom Potiowsky as he addressed the Westside Economic Alliance Thursday morning.

Potiowsky is the Professor of Economics at Portland State University and the Director of the Northwest Economic Research Center. He was the State Economist in 1999 through 2006 and again in 2008 through 2011, so he knows Recessions. His broad message, however, was that the problems with Oregon’s economy are not dire.

The patient is in recovery

Pearl District affordable housing complex opens 9/16, targets sustainability stamp

A former rail yard and brownfield in the north end of the Pearl District is now home to the neighborhood's newest affordable housing development.

California nonprofit developer BRIDGE Housing will officially celebrate the grand opening of the Abigail, a 155-unit apartment building at 1650 N.W. 13th Ave. this Friday. The building is home to 128 affordable units for families making between 30 percent and 60 percent of the median family income — with rents between $346 and $1,067 per month — as well as 27 units at market rate.

The six-story, mixed-use project will likely achieve Gold LEED for Homes certification due to a range of sustainability-focused measures, including a tight building envelope and efficient HVAC systems, exterior insulation, high performance windows and native plants and efficient irrigation systems.

Trim Shrubbery Away From The House

As we head into Fall and Winter, it is a great time to check around the exterior of your home and make sure it is ready for Winter.  Make sure to trim back trees and shrubs that have encroached on the house.  The general rule is to keep all vegetation at least 12 inches from the house so that nothing is touching the exterior.  This helps to minimize the chances for dry rot, mold and mildew, damage to the paint, and problems with pests.  At the same time, check around the exterior for peeling paint and cracks in the caulking.  It is a great idea to get these things repaired which will help extend the life of your home and improve the value of your investment.
