Branding Moment: Dearly Beloved, Would You Buy I Thee Red?

A great brand makes a strong impression when it is first encountered. Most real estate professional do not take enough time to craft their personal brand and miss this important opportunity.

Wine makers know they only have seconds to capture the attention of their target market, because people buy based on labels. This wine brand pictured above immediately caught our attention. It is called, Dearly Beloved, I Thee Red.

What is behind the intriguing label of a skull created of leaves and flowers? For a moment, we thought that this wine is to commemorate the Mexican holiday, known as the Day Of The Dead, which is coming up on October 31st. This holiday is about gathering friends and family to pray for those who have died and wish them an easy journey in their afterlife.

Our research revealed that this brand’s “manifesto” or mission statement is written as a tongue and cheek wedding ceremony. Here is in excerpt from their website:

Our truth is this: “LIFE IS SHORT”! Regret not your economies, forget not your mortality, and spend your days be they a single one in celebration of the moment, with wine of character, food of flavor, and friends of wit, wisdom, and honesty.”

They did capture our attention, and the $12 price is definitely affordable. We were attracted to the label, and its manifesto, but not enough to purchase the wine.

Would you buy I Thee Red?

I don't think I would. I didn't find the label to be attractive or attracting.

For me, purchasing is usually a result of having tried it somewhere or hearing about it from a friend.

I can see gifting it around Halloween, but beyond that, eh, no.  But your message is spot on

Hi Ron & Alexandra - I've learned the hard way that the wine branding wars have little to do with what's in the bottle, so if it's domestic, I'm going to ask my wine guys or take a friend's recommendation.

Alexandra, this is great branding of wine and we would certainly try it.

You asked about rice farming in Katy. Katy started rice farming in the early 1900's and it peaked in the 1970's. Here is a link to some additional info..

Dick Greenberg we would not buy it, because it has mixed messages.  It is not so much about the price, but about the quality of the wine in it.  Life may be short, and personally I would rather not drink wine than drink a fruit bomb type like this one is.  And if it was our last supper, I would pull out all stops and buy something truly outrageous and amazingly good...LOL A

I have never typically bought a wine because of  a label. I want to know more about what's in the bottle and the quality of it! We know many really good wine guys/gals and they do a good job of quiding us as they know what we enjoy.

Ron and Alexandra, I bought wine based on it's packaging, not a good thing to do. I love what you said "a good brand must be memorable".

Hey, October and Halloween is breathing down our necks.  I think the slightly gothe branding is perfect for the season.  Why am I having visions of Dracula sitting there with a bottle of that stuff in front of him?

Nope - but I don't count, because I simply have never understood why people drink wine at all. I think it tastes terrible.

I think this wine is aimed at the young crowd (under 25).  The label smacks of the hippie flower power and keeps it from being totally creepy, plus the humour and the references to death are so teen.

Would I buy it?  My humour has changed, I'm not into "creepy" and consistent with the buying practices of young adults, who are almost universally unschooled as to palate, this wine will sell to that age group regardless of its vintage or quality because of that "cool" label.  The vintner won't have to worry about its quality.  Buy it?  I won't taste it.

Like with everything in life it is a matter of taste.  We all have our preferences in food, drink, and places to live in.  What we were illustrating is that the brand had mixed messages and was not memorable, since a commenter mentioned that she had bought it, but had no memory of it.  There are many people and brands who are not memorable. A

Carol Wilson I agree with you that it is probably aimed at the younger set as a "drinkable" wine.  However, not all the young ones are gullible.  We met the head of the US for a very prestigious French brand who was 25 years old.  And his ambassador for a sister brand was even younger.  There are young winemakers here who are able to discern what tastes good.  And I think there are many more all over the world.  A

I really appreciate your comment and your thoughts.  A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel, I may have been hasty when I said "almost universally unschooled as to palate".  "Largely unschooled" would be more accurate.  You also have worthy points with which I concur.

I realize I sound like a snob in the words I wrote about not tasting that wine...but in fact, I am "cured", lol.  I once bought a bottle (before this wine came on the scene) whose label was intended to appeal to young people.  It did appeal to me, as I was in the right age group.  I went to a party, put my bottle on the counter with the others and took my first sip.  It was good on the tongue, but after swallowing there was an oily residue that hung on and overpowered the rest of the glass.  I hated it, and hated that I had been fooled into spending my scarce money on it.  I never forgot the lesson it gave me.

Alexandra, I appreciate that you and Ron provide subjects that are worth the time to think about them.  I have learned a lot from this subject.   :  )

I agree the message is mixed. It doesn't appeal to me at all. In fact, it looks gimmicky, a sure sign to "stay away."

Grant Schneider I think they captured mine enough for me to investigate it and wonder why.  This is definitely a copy of what the Mexicans have to represent the Day of the Dead.   In reviews I have read, they are definitely going for the younger set--the Goths?

When wine label designs costs can be as high as $80,000, I can't help but be fascinated by the thoughts behind them.  And often those sums are paid by the less expensive wines, because they are volume minded.

Carol Wilson thanks for your in depth reply.  A good bottle of wine is labor intensive, which is why they are priced higher, In a highly rated vintage, the price of the bottle, label, cork and foil can be as much as $3 per bottle.  Then the question is what is the quality of the juice within the bottle?   However, there is no guarantee that a more expensive bottle will be good.  With good guidance you will find something that is pleasing and not at all that expensive.  I often post about great wines some as little at $8, from France.  A
