Remodeling Your Home: Enjoy It Yourself!

Enjoy It Yourself!

How old is your home? 10 years? 15? Older? Are there things in your home that are outdated, or maybe there isn't enough living space? Do you have adequate outdoor space for entertaining in the summer? If you convert an extra bedroom in to a home office do you run out of guest space?

When someone thinks about selling their home, they start to think about the things that the buyer for their home might want...granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, a finished basement, a trex deck. Maybe new exterior or interior paint.

Here's my question. Why not get those projects done BEFORE you make the decision to sell, so YOU can enjoy them? What have you been waiting for?

I know couples that have been using the hall bathroom for several years because they had a water leak in the master shower. The leak was repaired but the tile work was not. It wasn't until they were ready to sell that they had the work completed. Great. The new homeowners will love it!

Bottom line?

Don't wait! Do it now and enjoy it yourself!

Hi Donna Foerster - Great points!  I have been down that road personally. Why didn't I do this sooner so I could enjoy it!

Hi Donna- like Sheri Sperry - MCNE I too have been down that road with one of our houses. We kept waiting for a hurricane to take our roof. When we bit the bullet and put on a new one (to sell our home) a hurricane came a few months later!

I'm sure with you on this, Donna. It causes me to twing when I talk with a seller who says, "I always wanted to remodel the kitchen...I'll do it now."  When one waits until selling, often the finished result is very neutral and bland--to appeal to all.

Of course we do need to consider future resale!

Hi Donna,

Well said!!!!  It makes me especially sad when older people do this.   I used to argue with my Dad that we should help my grandmother update her house  (bathroom and kitchen)  while she could enjoy it.  Not wait until after she was gone.

I think people should try to enjoy their homes as much as possible since it is their home.

Some times folks wait because they can't afford the changes and I understand that, but if you have the funds, make it happen!

This reminds me of the couple that had their refrigerator in the middle of the kitchen floor plugged into a big extension cord because the outlet by the cabinets against the wall where the refrigerator was supposed to go hadn't worked in two years. Go figure. They were ready to buy a new house. The bathroom faucet had a set of pliers on it to turn it off and on. The puzzler was they had two small kids. How did they use the pliers?

I usually suggest to understand why they’re remodeling.

Are you looking to up your resale value—or get more square footage? Define your end goal and stick to a budget.

That's good advice.
