New Scam - Missing Jury Duty
I have heard about a new scam in the last few days making the rounds in the Houston and Katy areas. I thought it was important enough to tell folks what I know concerning this new (at least in this area) scam. I also understand a local lawyer actually fell for this nonsense.
The scam goes something like this : You get a phone call from someone who claims they are with the local county justice system. This person is very confrontational and states that you missed jury duty without an acceptable excuse. Due to this an arrest warrant has been issued for your immediate and impending arrest. He may also claim the police right now are their way to your home or place of business. There is only one solution to stop this arrest process that being, of course, the payment of a large penalty fee via credit card right now over the phone! You are certainly caught off guard and your mind is racing thoughts such as “Did I accidentally throw away a jury summons”. Now you are worried and scared you will have the police at your door ready to haul you away to jail. NO BUENO!
The lawyer mentioned above, it has been reported paid these crooks $1,000 to get rid of the supposed arrest warrant. Obviously this guy is not a lawyer any of us should ever consider hiring to represent us in any action.
If you get one of these calls just hang up! Don’t worry about it and don’t get into a discussion with this crook. If you think somehow the call is legitimate then ask for specifics such this person’s name, phone number, court system he or she is calling on behalf of, the person's personal ID number ( if one exists) and anything else you can think of would help to figure out if the call was real. Then Google search the local county justice system and call them. Tell your story. I seriously doubt tany county court systems or federal will call folks and make threats.
