filling station historic gravity fed gas pumps

This is a photograph that is being shared by one of our Searcy Sleuths who sent it by email and gave the following statement.

"A friend of mine from Texas sent me this picture of their old store run by his grandparents when he was growing up.  It brought back many memories.  My Uncle Homer in southern Arkansas had an almost carbon copy.  As a kid I loved to work the gravity fed gas pumps where one hand pumped the gas into the glass cylinder and then let it run down the hose.  There was no electricity for a modern gas pump.  The gallons were marked on the glass cylinder.  My uncle carried a few groceries, some dry goods, salt pork, and sodas.  His brother, my Uncle Floyd, owned a small portable sawmill and this is where the 'hands' met for a ride to the sawmill.  Of course, they bought things from the little store."

This was interesting to me because I never thought about a store with gas pumps with no electricity.  I remember seeing these globe-type gas pumps but had no idea how they worked.  Thanks to Harold Gene Sullivan for giving us a lesson and sharing the picture.  Notice how relaxed the guy in the door appears!

My cousins Donald and jimmy Crockett owned a store almost like this one in  Rose Bud. They operated it until about 10 years ago. It goes back as long as the times my Great Grandfather's brother would go there and chew the fat and maybe play a game of checkers or two.

Thanks Harold for the story and pic.

Barbara, now that would be an interesting business model for today!  You'd have to teach all of us self-service folks how to use these pumps!

That is such a cool photo, Barbara!  I can remember visiting family in 1950. They lived in Kansas, and had an ole station that reminds me of the one pictured!

Don, I'm glad Harold Gene sent it to us.

Patricia, just think how hard folks used to have to work.

Myrl, thanks for a feature at the club.

John, they did.  But there were so many things then that they didn't have to worry about that now they do!  The world is so much more complex!
