WaCanId Bicycle Ride and Real Estate - Day 1
95 miles, and a 15 mile long grade, made day one, of the 371 mile International Selkirk Loop Bicycle ride, the toughest day over the course of the next 6 days. With my late start (click here for post of rewarding late start) it became even more important I focus on my personal ride, not changing the plan I had set in place over the previous months of training.
Riding not to 'catch up', but to enjoy the ride for itself, I enjoyed the first 30 miles along the Pend Oreille River through Priest River Idaho, and on to Oldtown Washington. Stopping ocassionally for pictures and a break stop at Oldtown Rotary. Even though staying within myself I was beginning to see riders and quite afew that had not left the break stop yet.
Following Pend Oreille River north to Usk, WaCanId deviated, from its previous year's course by crossing the river. At approximately mile 50, Flowery Pass and the 15 mile grade started. My longest and steepest climb, including training, to date. This portion of the ride really kicked my arse and in no small way. Head down, spinning, only looking to the next road reflector for reference, with quite a few stops, I finally made the summit on my own.
With Flowery Summit and the downgrade behind I passed through Chewela, only to find yet another unexpected challenge. With over 20 miles yet to go the winds had stirred over the open pastures and field ahead. It was going to be a head wind all the way. Every rolling hill showing itself from the one just topped seemed to grow in distance and lengthen the miles, not shorten them. Surprisingly it was my hands, wrists, and feet that were extremely sore. It was my legs and backside, from the time in the seat, I had expected to be sore.
I concentrated on riding and only short distances ahead of me. Enjoyed my arrival in Coleville a little over 9 hours after having started.
And how did I relate this first day to Real Estate? Seldom if ever over the course of a year does a Real Estate transaction go as planned. There are always issues that arise unplanned and unforeseen. Nor do those issues ever show themselves at what we would consider a convenient time. Obstacles occur and not at what we would consider our preferred time. With training, focus, and commitment we will not allow the unforeseen deter us from our planned goal. The ability to make changes, within the plan, will keep the goal in proper perspective without losing sight of it.
