Many people think that all you need to do is get a license, sell a few homes and you'll make tons of money. In reality, agents work very hard, often 50-70 hours a week. There is a lot to learn and an agent must keep current with what is happening in their market area as well as in the industry. It is important to be pro-active and to be able to build relationships and trust with people. What qualities do successful real estate agents possess?

  • Self-discipline
  • Good organizational skills
  • Dependability

  • Willingness to learn
  • Being a good listener
  • Marketing aptitude
  • Technology adeptness or a willingness to learn

As a real estate agent, you are your own boss, and run your own business. Although some companies  offer education and support in varying degrees, it is up to you how you spend your days. If you focus on lead generation, building relationships, take advantage of education offered, and work diligently you are much more likely to be successful. Most agents get paid only when they sell a house. Especially in the beginning it might take awhile to build up a clientele, so having money in the bank to get you though is important. Plan to incur some expenses as you would in any business. In real estate there are local dues, mls fees and errors & omissions insurance costs, in addition to costs particular to your company. But as a business owner, your earnings are unlimited!
