Do You Think The Media Over Hyped

Hurricane Matthew?

I know many folks think that the media really over hyped the mass evacuation of millions of folks from the Hurricane's sphere of influence. But did they really?

Sure it wasn't the hugely destructive and devastating disaster the weather forecastors had been prognosticating. But until you've actually been the victim of such a huge event or possibly even a stat you have no idea of what to expect.

The good news is that in the end the evacuations did in

fact save hundreds perhaps even thousands of lives

even though the financial losses will still be in the tens

of billions. But you're still foggin a mirror. Right?

The bad news? No doubt thousands of folks had to suffer through the inconvenience of temporary displacement, huge traffic gridlock, long lines at the gas station, bare shelves at Home Depot and the supermarket, hours of boarding up and securing, packing and preparing for an unexpected vacation and just the overall inconvenience of not being able to enjoy the the comforts and confines of their own humble abode.

But how may folks have returned home to find fallen trees and downed

electrical lines that could have landed on them or one of their children,

flooded out homes, wind and water damage that could have made for a very

uncomfortable couple of nights?

Look at it this way folks. At least with a hurricane you have plenty of advance notice and have the option to act accordingly which makes you so much better off than those who suffer the ravages of a CAT 5 tornado or a 6.7 earthquake. Neither of which offer much if any advance warning.

Thanks for the re quote Sham Reddy  and you are right about the ratings part albeit I'm sure glad they were there to cover it. Much better than all the Political crap.

In 1983 I was eight and a half months pregnant with my son and in the middle of a very bad hurricane that we "rode" out. You could hear all the tornado's whirling around the house and my very old mother in law lay on the floor-way of the darkened hall. No electricity and she was very scared.

Our little town lost over 100 very old Oak Trees and there was no power for weeks. There were missing roof tops and roof tops with trees in them. Not a fun place to be in the Texas heat and no air... Hurricanes are serious. Leave if you can.

That was not my first rodeo.

No John DL Arendsen I agree with you. The "hype" probably saved many hundreds of lives. A little inconvenience can be lived with,  but death and destruction can't be.

North Carolina certainly got pounded far worse than they imagined. And, unfortunately, everyone is hung up on wind speed so much, I fear surge and rainfall gets lost in the message.

Saw many water rescues on tv this morning from hotels far inland to which people evacuated - mother nature cannot be adequately predicted at times.  Have been watching certain FB boards, particularly for the Outer Banks (we have had property and many friends there for a number of years, so it is of particular interest), and seeing dozens of questions from vacationers asking "I'm heading down there today, can I get in my cottage?" while looking at photos of complete neighborhoods underwater - and reading emergency bulletins saying there is restricted access to the entire County - and there is such a huge disconnect.  For the state of NC, there was unbelievable damage and much of it unexpected.

Many people refuse to take alerts seriously and many people remain totally unprepared for any disaster at all, so I get the "hype" although, yes, certainly it is somewhat for ratings, although I think there is a lot of cynicism in that stance because I do believe many weather people are sincere in their desire to warn people of what is to come.

After Katrina, and Sandy, I think we have learned it's better to over hype the dangers of a storm than to downplay it.  We still had loss of life here in the states, but it could have been worse, had more folks not evacuated.

John- not one bit. People would be singing a different tune if they had taken another approach.  While science and predicting hurricanes have come a long way, you still can't tell for certain where or what a hurricane will do.  And, it takes time to get emergency personnel where they need to be to provide relief and supplies, yet far enough away from the strike zone to be safe.

The money and time we spent to prepare for the little rain and wind that we did get was worth every bit of it.

You would be amazed at how good the tornado reporting is in Oklahoma. We have television stations with the most sophisticated weather reporting in the country. In fact the meteorologist make more than the anchors.

Finally some words of REASON & WISDOM Kathy Streib. It's quite easy for those who can sit comfortably on their sofa in front of their TV, Computer, I Pad and even cell phone and think they can get all the answers about anything and everything they need.

Personally I'm quite passionate about it having worked as a disaster response contractor with FEMA for the past 3 decades on anything and everything from HURRICANES, FIRES, FLOODS, TORNADO'S & EARTHQUAKES.

We as a free people have the freedom of choice when it comes to dealing with hurricanes. Because of their inherent nature of long, drawn out and timely nature folks have time to make good or bad decisions.

Unfortunately we can't say that about fires, floods, earthquakes and tornadoes as they give very little if any wiggle room or time to contemplate.

But the thing that's always tipped my canoe is the arrogance, belligerence, self rightousness and sense of entitlement victims who didn't make the proper decision expect and demand of other human beings and resources needed to help rescue them.

And that's as it should be Joe Pryor I hadn't realized that they'd come that far with tornados. Good to know.
