Update on Operation Feral Cat Roundup Cedaredge, CO

I have to tell you the operation is going very well. The Cedaredge Animal Shelter is behind me 100%. They are even trying to figure out a shelter for me to have out for the cats, because the weather is getting colder.

The three kittens I trapped in July did very well at the shelter. They tamed down nicely. I did go in to check on them, and I couldn't believe how friendly they had become after a few weeks of good care. I wish I had thought to take a picture to share on this blog post. They were all so relaxed, and happy to be petted.

Update on Operation Feral Cat Roundup Cedaredge, COSince I trapped those first kittens, I've also managed to trap a few male cats. Of course they've been taken to the shelter where they will be neutered and taken care of. So far the shelter hasn't wanted me to release any of them back into my area. The shelter people seem to want me to concentrate on getting the male cats off the streets. I'm doing what I can.

Tonight I trapped another kitten. Of course this one isn't very happy, and it's crying loudly, and has been for a while. It's very scared, and life as it knows it, is going to change. Unfortunately the poor thing doesn't know it's going to change for the better.

Soon I will move it from my patio to the basement stairwell where it's warm and quiet. In the morning it will go to the shelter.

There are two momma cats that I feed everyday. I've been hesitant to trap them because I didn't know if they had kittens or not. I think I have that figured out, and I hope to have them at the shelter by the end of the week. One of them has a belly full of kittens.

The picture shows one of the momma cats with one of her babies. The baby is now at the shelter.

We can all help out by having our pets spayed or neutered. It's the right thing to do, and will help keep the animal population under control. There just aren't enough homes in this world for all of the stray dogs and cats. Please do your part and encourage others to do the same.

DO THE RIGHT THING AND GET YOUR PETS SPAYED OR NEUTERED. THERE AREN'T ENOUGH HOMES IN THIS WORLD!!!!

I've lived on Colorado's Western Slope for over 26 years. I love this area and all it has to offer, and I enjoy sharing what I know about my home. I can only do so much, Sharon Lee , but if we all do a little, we can do a lot.

I hope so, too, Roy Kelley . If more people would help, then we could get more accomplished.

Hi, Scott Godzyk ...it's too bad your neighbors won't do more than feed them. The winter will likely be difficult on them.

Thank you, Anna Banana Kruchten . Today the shelter gave me a big bag of cat food to help with my feeding of the neighborhood strays. Tomorrow I hope to have one of the momma cats to the shelter.

I would love to meet your sister, Evelyn Johnston . It's difficult to see the poor homeless cats, and not want them. Mike and I may adopt the one I hope to trap tonight. She's got a belly full of kittens. She has adopted us. She's the one in the picture. We call her Blue. She tries to come in the house. She really seems to like us...so once the shelter gives her a clean bill of health, we may take her in.

Hi, Georgie Hunter R(S) . I'm glad to hear you have people helping to control the feral cat population in your area. If we all do a little, we can do a lot.

Amen to everything you said, Endre Barath, Jr. . I'm going to do what I can to help out my little piece of the world, and it's nice to hear what others are doing in their area.

Tonight I hope to trap the momma cat in the picture. I call her Blue. She has adopted us, so it shouldn't be difficult to get her. She's pregnate. When the shelter gets her fixed and gives her a clean bill of health, we may take her in. She has already adopted us, and wants to come in the house.

I think it's great Chicago does that, Sam Shueh . I wish we had a better feral cat program around here. We are just too small. I can tell you that in my area there are no rabbits, squirrels or mice to be seen. There aren't even that many birds. That's because of all of the homeless cats.

Good job! We have 4 cats we adopted, and luckily we have plenty of open land around here where we do TNR ( Trap Neuter Release). We also set some winter shelters out for them around the fields and woods, plus they can get in barn or under sheds. I just make shelters out of styrfoam coolers turned upsid down, with a door cut in the end, and some bedding inside. I lay a small pice of plywood on top, then add some rocks and limbs on top to hole them down. Put some water or food in them before winter to get them use to using them.

Hi, Jeff Pearl ...I'm amazed at what you do. I'm also trying to do what I can, but our shelter has limited funding and is trying to build a much needed new building. We only have 2,000 people in my town. So you can imagine how difficult it is to get funding. There are so many non profits hitting up the community for a limited amount of money. The group is also applying for grants.

Just after I wrote this post, the shelter told me they would have to have me slow down. I can now only trap when they have room, and they aren't going to take any more males.

I will keep doing what I'm doing, and you please keep doing what you are doing. If we all do a little...we can do a lot. I believe that. I admire you for what you do.

I have two adopted cats and one rescued dog.
