Then and Now: The Handwritten Contract Vs. The Electronic Contract

A long time ago in a country just like this one a realtor would have to hand write most of a contract for purchase of property. I remember getting a typewriter and being amazed about being able to type in the information for a sale which much less by today’s requirements. This process was a lengthy one and required time and diligence in getting it done.

Today, the majority of contracts are done online and most fields populated through an MLS. The need for manual input is minimal to none especially if you do E-sign for the contracts as well. This is far less work than it used to be.

So you would think that hands down this new way would be so much better than the old way, right? Well I have noticed that more and more addendums are being done due to not checking information or relying on MLS to fill sections and not proofing the document before it is sent and signed. The old way may take longer but people had to come in and go over the contract, understand what they read, and then sign. There is an ease to today’s methods but just because it’s easy doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put work into explaining and making the transaction right.

Either way, the responsibility is on us as professionals to do what is right by our customers and make sure they are making informed purchases and not just getting them to E-sign and close the deal.
