Yes, exactly to the other comment and I don't need even a gallon of any of those! Also, I don't have to wage any wars to protect my interests in any of those either!

I think what it really boils down to is what Bill Oreilly said one time.....  You have to have gas. Work, Play, etc. etc. I am not sure anyone has to have an Evian to get to work....

Good analagy.  The only thing is I have to use my gas for my car and my job and my life.  I can do without a gallon of snapple or some of the other things.

LOL.... I like this post.  It was really cute.  Some of those things I will probably never buy in the quantities that I buy gas but this is a good lesson about the perspective all the same.

I drink tea daily, and I think I may drink a gallon of water easily.

I love to read these comparisons, but it's a lot like comparing apples to oranges.  You can get by without most of the liquids listed above, or may only need tiny quantities of them (such as brake fluid).

Much of the cost of these commodities is packaging, transportation costs and marketing.  You're not paying those prices per ounce or gallon for the liquids themselves.

Great post Jeffrey,

I use these analogies all the time and some people appreciate them and others seem to think they need or have a right to a car and fuel.  Having fuel and using it is a luxury as opposed to a necessity.  There is a Relator in Houston that does well(recent AR blog post) that doesn't own a car.

If people can't afford fuel and the automobile then they need to make the adjustments to their lifestyle.  Perhaps, move to an area that has great public transportation.  Maybe move to the country and become self-sustaing on a several acre parcel.  Many people make this decisions and the Eco-Brokers among us would applaud such moves.  I only wonder if they do the same thing.

Thanks for the reminder.

Tim

Actually gas is somewhat reasonable right now. Won't last long.

Thanks for the perspective Jeffrey!  At that price I need to stay off the Pepto.
