File under "desperately seeking content!" ...

Real Estate Agent with NextHome Premier

As I sat at the most recent sales rally for my brokerage, I found myself doodling on the pad I'd brought to capture valuable content, Learn One New Thing over and over again.  The meeting felt more like an infomercial to me with the steady stream of sponsors moving to the podium, But I stayed and waited and waited for some tidbit, some "new idea" some "new information" to take away.

In the end, my pad just had "learn one new thing" and then shortened to "L.O.N.T". written over and over.

I am making this my personal bar for asking anyone to take time from their day to meet with me - do I have "one new thing" to share?  If not, I am not holding the meeting.  I am on my way to our next sales rally, and am taking a blank sheet of paper to capture new ideas or information.  Hopefully, I'll come back with something to share.

Time is precious - particularly in the business of selling homes, I believe I have two things with which to make my living, my time and my skills.  I respect people who value my time, and value people who help me build my skills.

Imagine how much more productive we all would be if we used this as a bar?

What do you think?  I'd love to hear your thoughts!!

One new idea? I get it. I have spent most of my career helping organizations look for the new silver bullet.  But  I have come to realize that world series and super-bowl champions are the ones that execute the fundamentals better than the other guy.  Perhaps the best new idea is that ordinary people can do extraordinary things  if they put the passion into it.

Dear Jeanne,

Maybe you learned that one new thing elsewhere. If you keep your eyes open, you never know, where that new idea will come from.

Some feel that meetings are the best way to network and get to know others.

Brokerage sales managers tend to believe that scheduling meetings on a regular basis is valuable because it gets their salespeople used to getting together at a certain time each week, month, year, etc. Once the schedule is disrupted it takes a long time to re-establish it.

I personally dislike most meetings, but I can see why there may be long term reasons to attend beyond the short term "best use of my time."

Jeanne, I used to belong to couple of groups in our community that meet on a regular basis, unfortunately, they didn't add anything to me on a personal or professional level. I now choose which events/meetings I attend wisely as I can never get that wasted time back.

Jeanne, you are so right to dedicate a post on the quality of our interactions, or meetings.

A few years ago I implemented a system to check if the meeting I attended added value to my day. I had since then found a lot of solutions that work for me. Not quite there yet, but with more productive time now.

A mentor of mine taught me that when you're giving presentations and sharing "ideas" provide some value that is easy to digest and can be implemented right away. It's crucial to provide ideas that can be executed/acted upon.

It's unfortunate that you ended up with nothing other than L.O.N.T. written on it, but hey! It is a blessing in disguise because you wrote this post and people are loving you for it!

Have a great Friday, Jeanne!

One of the reasons I don't miss a big office setting (have my own brokerage) - all those meetings were mostly a big waste of time.

Jeanne,  I love the L.O.N.T strategy.    As you learn each new thing, you should ask yourself  how you can use it, how to execute it and when you'll start. Then, of course, do it.  LOL   Great post.  Thanks.

Good Morning Jeanne -  those holding a meeting should understand that too many meeting for no reason is a sign of poor leadership.  That should be a goal of the meeting planner to have just one new useful thing.

I have found that the place to learn at least 1 new thing a day is right here on ActiveRain.  I have gone to seminars and large presentations and what was to be the main feature of the day turns out to be something that I heard and learned about months before here.
