What does the term "sustainable" mean to you?

The term "sustainable" seems to be a buzz word frequently used.  Sustainable real estate development.  Sustainable agriculture.  Sustainable food.  Sustainable businesses.  Sustainable cities.  Sustainable growth.   The list  of  phrases using the term "sustainable" could go on and on.

Have you asked yourself, what does sustainable really mean?   If you don't know, there is frequently a disconnect between people that live in cities and farmer and ranchers.    I think part of the disconnect is that we don't always interpret words such as sustainable the same way.

A city person desiring wholesome, healthy food that is produced in a way that protects or improves the environment views sustainability as the methods/practices required to achieve that goal.

However, a third generation rancher often  views sustainability as the things they have done  or need to do to ensure that the ranch might one day be run by their grandkid's kids.  They believe their ranch is sustainable because it has lasted a long time and will probably continue to last.

What does the term sustainable mean to you and your business?

Sincerely,

Hi Sondra Meyer: To me sustainability would be something that can be used without being used up! If that makes any sense. Happy Friday!

Hi Sondra - I gave up on that S word a long time ago, since people tends to make it mean what they want it to. I'll go with ecologically and economically sane practices that take the long run into consideration. Have a great weekend!

I have two thoughts in this area Sondra, one from a strength of mine and one a philosophical point on life. Before I begin on that with regard to farms I think second and third generation farms are probably harder to "sustain" as the next generation with a faster pace of life might want to MOVE and do some other career path and the farm gets sold to the big corporate types or to just the stranger outside the family farmer. To me sustainability is maintaining at a certain level ANYTHING. With my strength of consistency in so many things I fault myself holding others to this bulldog holding on to a bone who won't let go concept. I have high expectations and probably impose them on others that do not have that strength. It is true in work, goals, fitness, communication, love, many areas. The philosophy of life part is "everything is temporary." Even a consistent person could change, get tired, have new interests, get sick and feeble, and die. I highly value time being sustainable in my area of consistency, cause I know nothing is guaranteed and view everything I come in contact with as precious to me. Sorry for my Zen moment LOL, but I was on a roll. Consistently wordy probably. I sustain storage servers at blog companies holding up all this text : )

I looked it up: Sustainable The way the last one reads according to how it got pasted, it says "or sufficient fun" then drops down with the ds, but I thought sufficient fun might be an interesting viewpoint on sustaining something, like LIFE for example!!
So, what prompted this post? I would be interested to know and I enjoyed reading the comments above. Very thought-provoking.

Hi Gayle,

As I've been moving towards getting my ranch certified organic, I've spent a lot of time reading about natural, organic, sustainable and many of the other buzzwords being used in marketing food nowdays.

If I can get it figured out, I think this could be a great rural real estate niche to focus on.

Sustainable businesses are not often created by real estate agents. This could become a blog series for you.

Super observation.  Having built a sustainable home in  Colorado years ago I think that it means creating what you need to sustain yourself such as water collection, solar and wind power, gardens, and raising your own meats etc.

For me it means being able to move along in life without using up all of the available resources. Keeping the use and what's available at equal levels. I know this term get used in so many different ways these days.

Stainable would have to be a generational builder. What's the word? Cumulative. You would need to build on everything progressively
