The Goal is Anti Climatic - Be it Personal or Business

With the 371 mile Rotary sponsored WaCanId 2016 International Selkirk Loop Bicycle ride now complete I have one last item to share in how I most relate this ride to Real Estate, or business and personal goals.  It proved itself to be true every day. but with the full ride to look back on there is not a doubt in my mind of this 'Ah ha's' importance. What does a goal really represent? What does it really do?

The goal or stated destination is anti climatic !  Yes it gives us focus.  A direction to move on a day to day basis.  Something to check our progress. To look ahead, and behind,  to see if we are on track to meet our desired destination.  While I did actually laugh out loud, completely by myself, when only a couple miles from the finish at City Beach in Sandpoint Idaho,  there was no crowd to greet me, no banners strung, and none of that would have really mattered.  I actually took a selfie to freeze that moment in time for myself.

What does a goal really represent?  It is the character built while working towards that goal.  The accomplishments along the way.  The obstacles overcome.  A plan made and followed. The confidence gained.  My ride was a year in the planning.  The self imposed weight loss I felt necessary.  The stationary bike riding prior to even getting on the actual bike.  Literally working thru the tears of the first weeks of bicycle seat pain and discomfort.  Looking back on my first 'Chafe 80 mile ride' that would represent only 1 of my 5 days of riding with WaCanId.  Pulling myself out of bed at 4am in the morning and enduring the low 40 degree temperatures of early spring. The day to day tests of the event rides themselves.  The challenges overcome.

All this is what will always be important to me, and looked back on with fond memories and renewed confidence for what ever endeavors I set for my future.  Yes the goal is anti climatic, in and of itself, but the day to day accomplishments and commitment it represents are incredible to look back on, and savor!

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint - congratulations on reaching your goal.

And anti-climatic it will be, if we do not set the higher goal!

Mark, I have SO enjoyed these "ride-along" posts with you! What a remarkable journey, both physical and emotional--your strengths, your struggles--you have grown exponentially in my book from the beginning of this year, even if you've lost some inches!

You should be "quietly proud" as my dear departed Granny would have said.

Hi Mark - Thanks for the great posts and interesting thoughts. I'm reminded of when Mary and I rode the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene-Spokane ride on our tandem - beautiful country and a great couple of days in the saddle.

Hello Dick Greenberg .  My buddy tells me of when his wife just could not make it any further on a steep ride, tandem.  He decided he would go ahead and finish the ride after she got off and waited for SAG lift.  Knew it would be much tougher by himself.  LOL  Just the opposite was the case.  Half the work.  They never road tandem again.  So Kudos to you and Mary.    mark

OK, I am officially in awe!  Good for you.

It's interesting - I got to meet a couple of Olympic gold medal winners, many of whom achieved their lives dream as a teenager, then struggled.  After years of focusing on one thing, they couldn't figure out what to do after the playing of National Anthem and the flight home.  I think we need to add new goals and revise the old ones as we go along.

Congrats Mark! Thanks for sharing your story. Goals are what we need to accomplish everything in life. Sometimes more personal but just as rewarding.

I agree Patricia.  A life long goal tends to narrow our focus a bit much.  These medalists will most likely be able to turn their focus to other areas or continue with the same for the next 4 years.  I think many professional athletes stay too long for the same reason.  It is all they have known.  Mark

Hello Donna & Larry Johnson .  As Patricia Kennedy states in her comment above too much focus on but one goal for too long may leave us a bit lost.  Make it a great day both and thank you for saying hello and commenting.  Mark
